Students go commando for charity
Public Service students at Solihull College take their physical and mental strength to the limit as they complete a Marine Commando Assault Course for charity.
Solihull College is one of the leading public service providers in the West Midlands and Warwickshire delivering public service courses in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry and across the UK.
The group of second year students – which included 18 year old Daniel Cole who has Cerebral Palsy, waded through mud and water to raise more than £1000 for their chosen charities, Air Ambulance and the Royal British Legion.
They travelled to Exeter to complete the challenge which entailed climbing through tunnels, scaling a range of heights, negotiating balance beams as well as crossing a rope bridge and zip wire.
Daniel found the challenge to be very a rewarding experience: “I wanted to show that despite my disability, I could do this challenge. It’s very satisfying to know that I’ve completed an assault course designed for the Royal Marines! It’s also a great feeling to raise money for the British Legion as I have relatives who served in the armed forces during World War One.”
Public Service Tutor, John Teuwen, who accompanied the group said: “Daniel is a true inspiration and has great determination. The whole group showed great team spirit on the day and really pulled together to support and encourage one another throughout. We hope that the money raised will go someway to support these worthy causes, well done to everyone involved.”
