Students showcase fine art
The hard work of Art students at Solihull College pays off as they see their creations come to life at this year’s BA Fine Art exhibition, ‘This was Tomorrow’.
‘This was Tomorrow’ showcases a range of unique paintings, sculptures and installations which have all been created by the College’s talented final year BA Fine Art degree students and will be open for public viewing until Monday 21st June.
The exhibition has been months in the making and is the very first to be held at the Blossomfield Campuses’ brand new multimillion pound Art Centre – which will be officially opened later this month. The name of the exhibition was chosen by students to mark the completion of the new centre and was the name of a popular exhibition in the 1960s.
Final year Fine Art student Katie Watkins’ creative installation uses black and white photos and the sounds of Vera Lynn to represent the loss of precious memories through Dementia, a subject which is close to her heart: “My Nan suffers from Dementia so I’ve seen at first hand the cruel way in which people can be stripped of their fond memories. My installation represents the residents of my Nan’s nursing home and how they are all trapped in their bodies and kept captive by debilitating diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia. It is also a play on how we as a society can sometimes dismiss or forget those who have forgotten themselves.” Kate said.
“We’ve all worked so hard throughout our three years at College and it’s such a rewarding feeling to see it all pay off. We hope that everyone who visits our exhibition will enjoy our art.” She adds.
A private viewing of the exhibition took place on Friday 11th June and was attended by a host of special guests including the Mayor of Solihull Councillor Ian Courts, Local MP Lorely Burt and senior management from Natwest - who are funding the College’s ongoing £31million redevelopment.
