Where will this course lead?

Certificate level will show competence in both knowledge and skills and is suitable for learners who would like to work or are already working as a teaching assistant, learning support assistant or those in a similar role in schools at level 3.

In addition to the Certificate units students may have direct entry to the diploma subject to their job role and experience or you may top up to a Diploma for which you will need to do at least 4 Optional units which will be selected in consultation with your assessors. (There is a charge for this - see Diploma.)

Maths, English and IT will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and may work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.

How will this course be delivered?

This course is college and work experience based. You will be in college for 1 session of 3 hrs per week and in work practice a minimum 2 days per week.

What qualifications will I get?

Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF)

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is via written assignments, presentations, course work and work based assessments.

How do I get a place on the course?

Places are offered by interview depending on your current experience working in schools and/or if you have a relevant level 2 Child Care qualification. You may also be tested for your English and Maths skills.

What are the entry requirements?

At least 2 years' previous relevant experience working directly with children in a schools setting.
Level 2 in English and Level 2 in Maths (equivalent to C or above in GCSE)

What else do I need to know?

To enrol on the course you will need to arrange a placement for two days a week working directly in the classroom with a teacher supervising you. The placement and course requires you to have an enhanced disclosure CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check which you will need to arrange with the school before you start. This certificate should be brought to college on the first session of your course with a letter confirming your participation at a school written on headed note paper and signed by the teacher you will work with.

What can I do after this course?

Top up to the Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools You may progress to Higher Education, including our HND in Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families, or to degree programmes such as Foundation Degree in Classroom Support, Foundation Degree in Early Years Bachelor of Education Degree (teaching Qualified Teacher Status) You will need to meet all the requirements for these options, please check the individual course leaflets

Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?

You will be need to provide all basic stationery including pens, pencils, paper, plastic wallets, folders plus any additional stationery which is required for your course.
You will also need to provide costs for text books, and trips (optional) during the course. You should allow approximately £30 to cover these costs and £60 for your Criminal Records Bureau check
