Where will this course lead?
If you wish to upgrade your Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Certificate (Level 3) to the Diploma this is the course for you. You will show competence in both knowledge and skills which will be suitable for working as a teaching assistant, learning support assistant or those in a similar role in schools at level 3.
What will I study?
In addition to your Certificate units students doing the Diploma TOP UP will need to do at least 4 Optional units which will be selected in consultation with your assessors and depend on your job role.
Maths, English and IT will be an important part of your course. You will continue to develop these skills and may work towards a qualification at an appropriate level.
How will this course be delivered?
This course is work experience based with college based workshops for guidance and support. You will be in college for 1 session of 3 hrs per week and in work practice a minimum 2 days per week.
What qualifications will I get?
Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF)
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is via written assignments, course work and work based assessments. You will need to return your certificate for upgrading to the Diploma
How do I get a place on the course?
You must have completed the new QCF Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Level 3. Places are offered by interview depending on your current experience working in schools and relevant level qualification.
What are the entry requirements?
QCF Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Level 3
At least 2 years previous relevant experience working directly with children in a schools setting.
Level 2 in English and Level 2 in Maths (equivalent to C or above in GCSE)

What else do I need to know?
To enrol on the course you will need to be in a relevant work placement for a minimum of two days a week working directly in the classroom with a teacher supervising you. The placement and course requires you to have an enhanced disclosure CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check which you will need to arrange with the school before you start. This certificate should be brought to college on the first session of your course with a letter confirming your participation at a school written on headed note paper and signed by the teacher you will work with.

What can I do after this course?
Additional units are available for professional development, if you wish to expand your portfolio of specialism. You may progress to Higher Education, including our HND in Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families, or to degree programmes such as Foundation Degree in Classroom Support, Foundation Degree in Early Years Bachelor of Education Degree (teaching Qualified Teacher Status) You will need to meet all the requirements for these options, please check the individual course leaflets
Is there anything else I will have to pay for in order to do this course?
You will be need to provide all basic stationery including pens, pencils, paper, plastic wallets, folders plus any additional stationery which is required for your course and £40 for your Criminal Records Bureau check
