Solihull College Basketball team celebrate after being crowned West Midlands champions in the British College’s Basketball League.
The College’s Basketball Academy team have won the British College’s Participant League 2010 for the West Midlands region securing them a place in the Performance League, as well as the opportunity to compete in the Elite League, next season.
The team, made up of students aged 16-19, won a total of 11 games out of the 14 league games they played this season with 16 year old Team Captain Lewis Johnson scoring an average of 50 points per game.
Lewis comments: “ As a team, we’re really pleased that we’ve been recognised in the British College’s League. We’ve really enjoyed this season and everyone’s put their all into the game. We look forward to competing in a higher league next season.”
The Basketball Academy gives students the chance to learn more about the sport, train on a weekly basis and compete in tournaments whilst studying an academic or vocational qualification with the College.
Lewis, who as well as being Team Captain is studying for his A Levels, adds: “ The Academy is great, it allows me to study for practical qualifications whilst competing in a sport I love.”
Team coach and former international British Basketball League player, Steve Mroso said: “I’m so pleased with the team’s performance throughout the tournament, they’ve shown determination and real quality in every game.”
Since its launch last summer, the Academy has gone from strength to strength and now includes a girl’s team. Steve Adds: “ The Academy caters for young players of all abilities and offers a great balance between academic studies and sport. We’re delighted that we have been able to develop a girl’s team too, there’s been huge interest in the scheme and we look forward to seeing even more enthusiastic students getting involved. “
