The Solihull College Football Academy is run for all students who have a passion for football. The Academy has teams for men & women, managed by UEFA qualified coaches, in which players with potential enjoy the prospect of playing professionally for local teams such as Birmingham City Ladies.

Run by experienced coaching staff, the Football Academy endeavours to hone the talents and skills of interested participants, with an aim to get students fit, active and enjoying sport, as well as maintaining a competitive edge. Students from any course across the college are able to attend a trial, compete and participate in the Academy.

*Please report to the Sports Centre reception at 1:30pm with appropriate kit including shin pads, footwear suitable for 3G pitch and plenty of fluids. If you suffer with any medical conditions or suffered with any recent injuries, please make us aware of this prior to your trial and bring any required medication with you on the day.

Will Grigg

After studying a Level 3 Sport Course in 2007 and being part of the Football Academy, Grigg was scouted playing in the Solihull Moors youth team and now plays first team football for Walsall Football Club. Since, he has gained a number of Under-21 appearances for his country before making his full International debut for Northern Ireland in a match against The Netherlands in June 2012.

Amarii Bell

Completing a Level 3 Sport Course in 2011, Bell was spotted by scouts playing for the Solihull Moors youth team and signed a 12-month professional contract with local Championship team, Birmingham City, where he is a prominent talent in the Under-18 and reserve teams.

Manny Smith

Smith graduated from Solihull College in 2005 after completing a Level 2 NVQ course in Sports Coaching, playing for the Academy during his time here and through this, becoming involved in the Solihull Moors youth team. He was scouted and has appeared over 100 times professionally for Walsall Football club and now plays for Notts County.

Rob Williams

Rob Williams (Head of Academy Coaching – Solihull Moors FC) Rob is a highly experienced, qualified and knowledgeable coach having worked in both the male and female game over the past 19 years, is currently working towards the UEFA A Licence and spent the first half of this season (2015/2016) as 1st team coach at Stourbridge FC.

Some of our Football Academy students have gone abroad on International scholarships to attend overseas universities and concentrate on professionally playing the game while they learn in higher education. Three of our Level 3 Sports students, Wayne McCarron, Oliver Verdult and Sam Brooks, obtained scholarships to play soccer in the USA during the time they were playing for the Solihull Moors youth team as part of the Football Academy.




Marc is a UEFA ‘A’ qualified coach and is the head of the Football Academy at Solihull College. With years of experience running and co-ordinating numerous sporting roles in football, Marc has a vast knowledge of the game, an eye for ability and the capacity to mould a prospective talent, in to a professional sportsman. In previous jobs, Marc has run youth teams at Coventry City, has coached with and been the Director of the Centre for Excellence at Birmingham City Ladies FC and is also the current manager of the British Colleges squad.


The current first team and youth team manager at Solihull Moors, Marcus works closely with the Academy’s best young talents to nurture their potential, giving those with the right talents the opportunity to ply their skills in the semi-professional league. Marcus has a wealth of experience as a professional footballer, playing for QPR, Crewe and Millwall under the tutorage of Premiership managers such as John Gregory and Ian Holloway.


Our physio team are dedicated medical professionals who aid the Academy team throughout the year, helping maintain fitness and supporting those who succumb to injury during training or match days. Paul has a vast amount of knowledge from previous roles within various professional clubs.

Mark currently Heads up the Youth and Community programme at Solihull Moors. He previously worked with Birmingham City first team under Alex Mcleish. Mark Was Head of Recruitment at Blues, Coventry and Walsall and Head of youth at Wycombe Wanderers.

Darren Byfield

Darren Asherton Byfield is a semi-professional footballer who plays as a forward Solihull Moors. Byfield won six caps for Jamaica in 2003, and has scored 110 goals in 484 appearances across all domestic competitions so far in his football career. Darren also played in the PREMIER LEAGUE FOR Aston Villa and for Walsall in league 1.


The Midland Performance Golf Academy in partnership with Solihull College is a pathway within our Level 3 Sport Diploma aimed at those with exceptional talent on the green to carve themselves a career within the professional golf circuit. Under the tutelage of experienced golf professionals, based here in Solihull, students who choose to participate will begin to sharpen their abilities and progress their talent, with long term career options open to scholarships abroad, semi-professional and professional golf tournaments and national representation. Men and ladies are encouraged to join, regardless of handicap.


Henry James

An accomplished young athlete, Henry graduated from the Solihull College golf programme in 2012 and has accumulated a number of exceptional accolades from all levels of the amateur golfing infrastructure. Awards include; Winner of the Welsh Boys Championship, Runner-up of the British Boys Amateur Championship, and Worcestershire Boys Matchplay tournament winner two years in a row. His latest and greatest achievement to date was a call up to the Welsh National Team for the 2012/2013 season.

Rachel Jennings

Graduating in 2008, Rachel has gone on to achieve a number of great accolades since her time as an apprentice at the College. On her maiden professional circuit tournament, Rachel came 3rd in the Slovak Open in 2011, missing the top spot by a fine margin. In 2010, she represented Great Britain & Ireland in the 36th Curtis Cup held in the USA and before that at the Vagliano Cup in Germany. More recently, Rachel has gone on to earn her card for the Ladies European Tour.

Adam Norman

After undertaking the Golf Apprentice course at Solihull College and graduating in 2006, Adam went on to win the Berkhamstead Open in 2006, beating experienced England Squad member, Ross McGowan in the process. Among his other accolades, Adam has also won the Midland Amateur Order of Merit and gained full playing rights for prestigious Europro Tour, allowing him to compete in golf tournaments across the continent.

Alex Davies

Alex joined the College in 2008 and excelled with us within the first year of his studies. 2009 proved to be a highly successful year, with Alex winning the British Colleges Sport Golf Championship, coming fourth in the Intercollegiate Tour Players Championship and being awarded runner-up at the Intercollegiate Tour-Midland Region Order of Merit.





Stuart is the head coach of Shirley Golf Club and a well established PGA Professional. Throughout his career, he has mentored aspiring amateur golfers, both professional and elite, all over the West Midlands and Warwickshire. Since 1997, Stuart has run his self named ‘Stuart Bottrill Golf Academy’ from which he trains and guides aspiring athletes, including a national winning junior golf team. Currently the Warwickshire County Coach for boys and girls, Stuart is also an England Woman’s Golf Association (EWGA) coach and won the ‘nPower Coach of the Year’ in 2007.


Recently voted one of ‘Golf World’s Top 100 Coaches’, Alistair is a seasoned, first-class mentor who has taught professionals on the national and international circuit, working with players who have represented outfits like the South West Wales Academy, Birmingham University and Great Britain and Ireland. Among his long list of past coaching accolades, Alistair has guided many of his pupils to professional tournament qualification, a number of whom have gone on to win and make a name for themselves in the elite and professional amateur circuit.


A brand new institution being introduced in September 2013, the Solihull College Netball Academy is tailored for aspiring young, female athletes to perform on the court competitively at local levels, build up their health and fitness and make great progress on to a number of potential sport programmes and courses. Trained by a qualified England netball coach, ladies with a keen interest to play sport and get active are encouraged to join the academy and try their hand at netball, whether competitively or recreationally.


Donna Marks

A qualified Level 2 England Netball coach, Donna will be leading the new netball team in both friendlies and eventually, competitive league fixtures, teaching the key skills, techniques and strategies needed to enhance your overall game, to those in the academy.the Intercollegiate Tour-Midland Region Order of Merit.


The Solihull College & University Centre Cricket Academy is run in partnership with Complete Cricket for young athletes who wish to progress within the professional game.

Students who are part of the academy will benefit from 10 hours of cricket based activity which is supplied by Complete Cricket. All coaches who work for Complete Cricket are at least ECB Level 2 qualified and some even have professional experience, including Jim Troughton, Darren Maddy and Dominic Ostler.

Students will also be studying towards 2 coaching qualifications including a Coach Support Worker qualification and will be taught by those who have experience within the sporting industry. The cricket academy aims to hone the talents and skills of those who participate and improve fitness and knowledge of the game to allow students to progress within the industry.
