Where will this course lead?

Our Applied Science Level 2 First Extended Certificate provides a route into continued education in science. This course combines the key areas of Biology, Physics and Chemistry to give you a well rounded practical and theoretical understanding of the Applied Sciences.

You will take part in a range of laboratory practicals, developing an understanding of common practices in laboratory settings. You will also have the opportunity to explore a wide range of career paths open to you and find out about how you can pursue various careers in the wide world of science.

What will I study?

During the course you will study the following:

- Biology, Physics and Chemistry

- Skills of carrying out a scientific practical project

- Application of science in a science based organisation

- Appreciation of scientific skills applied in the workplace

- Health and safety in the laboratory

- Applications of physical sciences (chemistry and physics)

- Human physiology and health

- Key skills

How will this course be delivered?

The course is delivered through a series of units composed of both practical and theoretical components. The delivery of the course will be through student centred lessons complimented by some interactive computer based activities.

What qualifications will I get?

Applied Science Level 2 First Extended Certificate (NQF) GCSE English or Mathematics* Functional Skills English and/or Mathematics* * Maths and English programmes will be based on your grades on entry

How will I be assessed?

This course has two externally set examinations. All other assessments are carried out through a series of assignments. All modules are graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction levels. There is also a Level 1 Pass grade fall-back option available if a Pass grade at level 2 is not achieved.

How do I get a place on the course?

Though a successful interview and demonstration of a commitment to studying science.

What are the entry requirements?

Grade D/3 or higher in GCSE Science. Grade D/3 or higher in either Maths or English GCSE.

What else do I need to know?

Students will undertake a wide range of practical investigation which will be laboratory based through which good laboratory practice will be developed. All laboratory safety equipment will be provided by the College. You may wish to purchase a recommended textbook to accompany the course. All students will be required to make set contributions towards educational trips and/or travel expenses to local events.

What can I do after this course?

If you are successful on this course, you will be able to continue studying towards level 3 qualifications in scientific disciplines, subject to the entry requirements of those programmes. Seek employment in a science based organisation.
