Functional Skills in English and Maths at an appropriate level.
To pass this qualification you will work on a number of practical activities during the lessons, and also complete a portfolio of evidence to meet required assessment criteria. In addition, you will be tested for English and Maths Functional Skills at a level appropriate to you.
Conditional places are offered after an interview, depending on your predicted grades and a good reference from your current tutor. You may also be tested for your English, Maths and ICT skills during our Induction weeks.
For external applicants, at least two GCSEs are preferred, with a Grade of 2 in English and one other subject (preferably Mathematics), a good tutor reference, followed by a successful interview process. We would expect students studying functional skills in Mathematics and English to have achieved at least Entry Level 3.
Internal applicants will need to have successfully completed their course and provide a good Personal Tutor reference, followed by a successful interview process.
If you have a learning difficulty or disability please let us know when you apply. You will be offered support in your interview. If you need help completing your application we can help with this too.
You need to bring pen, notebooks and folders to every lesson. It is expected that you will bring a memory stick to save and back up your work.
There may be educational trips as part of the course and students will be required to contribute to them. This must be paid before the trip.
Head phones will be used in a number of our units and students may prefer to bring their own. It would also be useful for students to buy a memory stick on which to save and back up their work
Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success on the course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades.
If you have not achieved an A*/9 - C/4 grade in English and Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skill, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades.
The majority of our students who are successful on this course will be able to continue studying at level 2 in IT, business or a number of other qualifications. Some students may go on to work.
