Where will this course lead?

We will show you how to apply and master specialist make-up techniques and work with artificial hair for a broad range of creative and dynamic industries.

You will cover every aspect of advanced make-up techniques for film, television and stage alongside other media purposes. This comprehensive course covers basic hairdressing, media make-up, wigs and postiche, fashion and photographic make up , character make-up and special effects.

This is aimed at learners that are looking to start a career as a make-up artist.

 Learners could progress into employment, work within a beauty salon as a make-up specialist, freelance make-up artist in T.V or film or within department store for a cosmetic company.  Apprenticeship, or further their studies by taking other qualifications at university level.

What will I study?

- Monitor and maintain health and safety.
- Client care and communication in beauty related Industries.
- Apply airbrush make up to the face.
- Camouflage make up.
- Media make up.
- Fashion and photographic make up.
- Style and fit postiche.
- Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps.
- Create and cast small prosthetic pieces and bald caps.
- Cut women's hair to create a variety of looks.

The programme consists of the following topics:

- Cutting and styling techniques for performers 
-  Fashion and photographic  hair and make-up, Creative make-up design for productions and industry demands -
- Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps -Special effects make-up -
- Create and cast small prosthetic pieces and bald caps.
- Wig dressing, fitting and maintenance.
- Learners may study GCSE or functional skills Math as an important part of the course

Work experience of a minimum of 90 hours

Independent learning at home completing activities set by tutor ( 2 hours a week )

How will this course be delivered?

Salons, classroom, theatre etc. what type of learning theory practical, research.

In addition to your full-time course every student has an individual study programme which ensures that you develop the right skills and experience to progress onto either higher education or gain employment. What's included in your individual study programme will vary depending on what you have already achieved and your career aspirations.

For example; if you haven't yet achieved GCSE grade 4 (grade C) in English and maths at 16 you will continue to study these by resits or by taking Functional Skills at an appropriate level. Achieving a good level of English and maths is important so that you can compete in today's labour market and securing the career you've always wanted.

Work placement .

Work placement will form an essential part of your individual study programme and all students will be expected to complete an appropriate work placement related to their full-time course.

What qualifications will I get?

The Level 3 Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up Artistry.

Maths qualification (if required)

How will I be assessed?

It will be assessed in theory and in practical throughout the year. Assessments takes place in a range of realistic working environments, including shows, competitions and theatre productions. You will also be required to complete and produce a portfolio and a Look book.

Attend an interview bringing an up to date reference, school report and predicted grades.

Bring a piece of work to the interview researching either a job role in the make-up industry or a make-up brand.

Attend an induction day in June and induction days in September.

What are the entry requirements?

Two grade 3's or above (one must be English Language) (D or above in the old GCSE grades)

Level 2 hair and media make up or level 2 hairdressing or L2 beauty or L2/3 in art and design

Good attitude, keen, enthusiastic and positive

Positive reference from school/college or workplace

You will need to purchase a kit and uniform.

You will need to be flexible and able to carry out work experience in your own time.

What can I do after this course?

On successful completion of this course, there are job opportunities in the television, theatre and film industries - or you could explore becoming a freelance make-up artist.

Students can also progress on to the foundation degree or degree in Specialist Hair and Media Make-up, Spa Management or Beauty Therapy Management .
