Science Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Study Mode: Part Time   |    Course Level: Level 3

Where will this course lead?

A science industry maintenance technician contributes to the fault free and safe operation of science industry plant by the installation, maintenance, testing and repair of mechanical, electrical equipment and instrumentation.

They will be proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying areas for improving their work environment. As well as core engineering skills, maintenance technicians need to understand and follow working practices that are specific to the safety critical science industry.

What will I study?

This apprenticeship is formed of three main assessment methods and a final end point assessment.

The foundation course studied as part of this apprenticeship is IOSHH Working Safely course.

The technical certificate, studied by attending college one day per week for two years. It is called a Level 3 Diploma in engineering. Whilst studying for this qualification, the units you may study include:
- Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace
- Mathematics for Engineering Technicians
- Mechanical Principles
- Electronic Principles
- Properties and Applications of Engineering Materials

You will also need to complete a vocational competence evaluation log.

This logbook will be evaluated at least three times (behaviours evaluation log) throughout the apprenticeship and supports your completion of the end point assessment.

When your employer and the college confirm that you have completed the required studies, you will be entered for an end-point assessment which includes:
- Review of behaviours evaluation log
- Synoptic Assessment Test
- Vocational Competence Discussion
- Scenario Case Study

How will this course be delivered?

These courses are delivered through classroom teaching, practical workshops and computer based workshops.

You will have the opportunity to complete practical workshops, develop CAD skills within our Advanced Manufacturing Centre, programme robots and automation systems and model hydraulic systems.

You will also be allocated an assessor who will visit you in the workplace to support the development of the vocational competence log.

What qualifications will I get?

Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard: Science Industry Maintenance Technician

This standard meets the professional standards of the Engineering Council for registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech). Registration is subject to candidates successfully completing the appropriate learning, developing the appropriate competence, and undergoing professional review.

How will I be assessed?

The subject units are assessed in a variety of ways; some are assessed by assignments which may involve working in groups or independently and marked by your teachers using awarding body Criteria.
Some assignments are assessed whilst undertaking practical activities or by completing written assignments
Other modules or qualifications may be assessed using externally marked exams.

How do I get a place on the course?

Employers can receive advice and support from the Employer Services team at Solihull College and University Centre.

What are the entry requirements?

The desirable entry qualifications for a level 3 apprenticeship standard are 4 GCSE at grade C/4 or above including Maths and English. However, exceptional candidates or those with experience in engineering can be considered on a case by case basis.
