This course is a Foundation Degree programme designed to offer flexible learning patterns and designed to enable students with a relevant Level 3 qualification in an Electrical and Electronic Engineering subject, or equivalent, to obtain a FdEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and, if desired, progress to a BSc(Hons) programme in Electronic Engineering at Solihull College and practice in a career as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
Students graduating with this FdEng award will be confident practitioners in Engineering with the knowledge and ability to apply current technology to existing products & designs as well as developing new ones. They will have a sound understanding of Engineering Principles and the skills necessary to communicate them to others and develop them into finished products that meet customer expectations and agreed specifications. Within this skill set will be the ability to reflect on their own work to evaluate what worked, what can be improved and how the overall process can be changed for the better.

*Optional Units: *Mathematics II and Electronic Design are compulsory for students who wish to progress to Level 6 of the BSc (Hons) Electronic Engineering degree.
The programme consists of lectures, seminars, project work, and directed activities to promote independent learning along with workshops, and tutorials. Work-based learning is also an important part of the programme and will be linked in with core modules.
These are various modes of attendance available
- 3 days per week (full-time) for 2 years
- 1.5 days per week for 2 years (If working in engineering)
- 1 day per week for 3 years (If working in engineering)
- 0.75 days per week for 4 years (if working in engineering)
FdEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering
A variety of methods of assessment will used within the programme, including coursework, assignments, examinations, experiments and presentations. Most modules consist of more than one method of assessment.
You must apply through UCAS for full-time study (Code: TBA). This will notify both Oxford Brookes and Solihull College that you have applies. If you wish to apply for part-time study, please e-mail email@example.com and request an application form. Places are offered by interview with the course tutors, this can be over the telephone or face to face depending on what best suits your circumstances. All interviews are held at Solihull College.
Entrants to the Programme normally possess the following
For Part-time Attendance
- Normally a minimum of two years relevant work experience and a current role in an appropriate workplace setting AND
- A BTEC Level 3 Qualification (MM) or A-level Equivalent in a relevant subject.
OR for Full-time Attendance
- Normally a BTEC Level 3 Qualification (MMM) or A-level Equivalent in a relevant subject.
In addition a Grade C/4 or above in GCSE Maths and English or equivalent will normally be required.
If you enrol as a full-time student you will need to find a placement within an engineering company for the equivalent of 30 days. The college will support you in finding a placement but it is your responsibility to ensure you gain the 225 hours of work placement required for the course. There is an exit point where students can leave with a Certificate in Higher Education.
