In this session, you will learn how to handle materials and equipment safely.

The learning from this session will help you to:

  • Identify legislation relating to the safe handling of materials and equipment.
  • Understand procedures for safe lifting and handling activities in accordance with guidance and legislation.
  • Understand the importance of using and identifying the different types of lifting equipment when handling materials and equipment.

In this session you will learn to understand the health and safety regulations, roles and responsibilities under the personal protective equipment (PPE) at work regulations.

The learning from this session will help you to:

  • Identify and understand the health and safety legislation relevant to and used in the construction industry in relation to PPE.
  • Identify and understand employer and employee responsibilities under the health and Safety at work act (HASAWA) regarding the provision, use and maintenance of PPE in the construction industry.
  • Identify the types of PPE and their uses.

In this session you will learn to maintain and store portable power tools and understand the health and safety regulations, roles and responsibilities under the Provision and use of work equipment regulations (PUWER)

  • Identify the power sources used for portable power tools.
  • Identify types of tooling and their uses.
  • Identify the safety equipment required when using different types of portable power tools.
  • Identify and potential hazards associated with power tools and their causes.

In this session you will learn to identify signs and notices used in the workplace and understand their meaning and uses.

  • Understand and identify the signs and signals used in the workplace, communicating potential hazards and other important information.

In this session you will learn about access equipment and working at heights.

The learning from this session will help you to:

  • Identify and understand legislation to working at heights.
  • Identify types of access equipment (ladders/Scaffold).
  • Understand safe methods of use for access equipment.
  • Identify hazards and dangers of working at height.

In this session you will learn to understand and maintain safe and healthy working practices when excavating holes and trenches by manual digging.

The learning from this session will help you to:

  • Know how to comply with relevant legislation and official guidance when excavating holes and trenches by manual digging.
