Where will this course lead?

Develop your artistic and creative skills and explore a range of art disciplines. Find your own style and experiment with new drawing and painting techniques.

What will I study?

Develop your drawing and painting techniques and practice different effects. Discover a variety of media - such as pencil, charcoal, soft pastels/chalks, oil pastels, acrylic paints, use acrylic paint paper and canvas.

Learn to develop perspective, tone, texture, composition and layers. Practice: basic drawing, sketching and painting, observational drawing (drawing from life), drawing from pictures and photographs. Discover a variety of media. In addition, we will be looking at blended learning (online learning), and may make the most of online popular artists work and demonstrations.

There will be a different theme each term and you will produce a painting.

Week 1: Please bring your A3 sketchbook and the pencils B to B8, rubber, sharpener and a pen on the first week. Other materials will be discussed in week 1.

How will this course be delivered?

The terms are usually 10 week duration, dependable upon start date of each term. Places are bookable via the Enrolment Team in advance. Each session is 2 hours per week.

This course will be delivered at Woodlands Campus.

You will need your own sketchbook, paper, pencils (B-B8), charcoal, acrylic paints, paint brushes for acrylic paints, non-breakable water jar, palette, apron, acrylic paint paper, chalks/soft pastels, oil pastels, other materials.

What qualifications will I get?

This is a leisure and personal development course.

How will I be assessed?

Ongoing tutor assessment with time for self-reflection. No exams.

What are the entry requirements?

You must be aged 19+.

A willingness to learn new skills and enjoy being creative.

What else do I need to know?

Wearing an apron or old shirt to protect your clothes is advisable. Students will need to supply their own materials from Week 1. For example: drawing sketchbook A3 size, large sheets of drawing paper, acrylic paint paper, acrylic paint, palette, brushes, non-breakable pot for water and a mixing plate or pallet, drawing pencils (B-B8), charcoal. Other equipment will be discussed during the duration of the course.

This course will run subject to a minimum class size.

What can I do after this course?

Upon completion of the term you will need to enrol on this course for the next two terms. There is also a Beginners Oil Painting class at the College on Bloosomfield Campus which you may also enrol for. Consider progressing towards a higher level art qualification at the College or consider how your new skills might lead into employment or self-employment opportunities.

Whilst registered as a Solihull College Student: you have the benefit of access to the Library, and the Careers Department who are able to give you information, advice and guidance on setting up your own business, and an opportunity to attend an optional 'start your own business' online workshop.
