This course is ideal for you if you are working as a Civil Engineering Technician or associated role, carrying out design, development, construction, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of the built environment and infrastructure. Technicians will be required to have a broad skills base to work in areas which include sustainable construction, structural integrity, geotechnics, materials, tunnelling, marine and coastal engineering, water, waste management, flood management, transportation and power. carrying out civil engineering tasks, developing and finalising civil engineering solutions, establishing and implementing health and safety for civil engineering personnel.Â
This apprenticeship standard will develop your knowledge and prepare you for a career in the Industry or progression onto an HND or Degree level course.Â

This course will be delivered in partnership with your employer, one day in College at the Blossomfield Road Campus with the remainder of the week spent in your place of work under the direction of your employer. The work in College it is predominantly classroom based with units such as the project taking place in a suitable location.
On completion of the apprenticeship the apprentice will have satisfied the requirements for registration as an Engineering Technician by the relevant professional engineering institution in accordance with the requirements of the Engineering Council as the registration body.Â

The part of your Apprenticeship that you follow at College is assessed through written assignments and practical observations for the Edexcel BTEC Level 4 HNC in Diploma in Construction (Civil Engineering).Â
The part of your apprenticeship which is followed in the workplace will be reviewed during regular visits by a college reviewer. Â
Completion will be achieved my successfully passing the End Point Assessment with a relevant professional organisation (e.g. Institution of Civil Engineers). This will consist of a presentation and structured interview.Â

Normally the course enrols students who have reached the minimum age of 18. Students enter with at least one of the following qualifications:Â

4 GCSEs grade C or level 4 and above, plusÂ

or BTEC National in a relevant construction/engineering qualification, Â
or an equivalent qualificationÂ
Students with existing level 4/5 qualifications may be eligible for some accreditation for prior learning which can be discussed on an individual basis.Â
Mature students, over the age of 21, with a suitable background or experience may be accepted without formal qualifications. Applicants who do not meet the standard entry criteria but have appropriate industry and life experiences may have their prior learning and skills considered. Applicants may be required to complete an Aptitude assessment (this will be advised at interview).Â
All students will be invited to interview before an offer is made.Â
This course is a part time program and you will be expected to attend 1 day per week between the hours of 9-6, timetables will be issued to successful applicants prior to induction and enrolment in September of the current Academic year.Â
There are no direct additional costs for this course but you may want to purchase some text books for further reading, a suggested reading list will be supplied at the beginning of your course. We have a wide selection of library books and electronic books for you to use for this course. You will be expected to supply your own stationery such as folders, paper and pens. A scientific calculator is required and a set of mathematical instruments including a protractor and compass. Connection to the internet is expected, but facilities are available at College to do this if necessary. You need to provide your own safety boots and High visibility jacket suitable for use on highways (i.e. yellow not orange). You will be expected to provide your own transport to site visits but these are usually local with the furthest to attend laboratory trips or local building sites.

Costs depend on the direction and ambition of your work. We suggest budgeting approximately £250 for materials and work-books in the first year.
