Solihull College & University Centre is proud to champion decolonising the curriculum through a new initiative launched by Dr. Megan Wakefield, one of the College’s Curriculum Sustainability Leads and Lecturer in English.
Dr. Wakefield has launched a series of voluntary monthly staff meetups focused on ‘Decolonising the Curriculum’ aimed at fostering inclusive and reflective teaching practices across subject areas.

The first session, which took place last academic term, was attended by a cross-section of curriculum staff as well as colleagues from the Library and Student Support teams. Together, they explored how curriculum design can better reflect the diverse identities and experiences of students, and how more inclusive representation can strengthen student engagement and belonging.
“There’s a lot of fantastic work happening around diversifying the curriculum,” Dr. Wakefield comments, “but decolonising it requires further critical thinking, care, and collaborative effort. It’s about questioning the structures, narratives, and power dynamics within the curriculum itself.”
The sessions will centre around one resource, idea, or piece of teaching material per month, discussed through a decolonial lens. The goal is to offer a supportive and practical space where staff can share insights, develop strategies, and motivate one another in this vital work.
Dr. Wakefield adds: “This work can feel overwhelming, but approaching it one step at a time, together, can make all the difference. We’re building a space where we can learn from each other and grow.”
