Conversation Clubs launched to support families settling in the UK

2nd December 2025

Solihull College & University Centre has launched ‘Conversation Clubs’ at local Family Hubs, as well as online, to help families settling in the UK build confidence in English and strengthen connections with their local communities.

The initiative is being delivered in partnership with resettlement teams and other local organisations and is designed to support families as they adjust to life in the UK. The clubs offer practical opportunities to practise every day English in a friendly and supportive environment, making it easier for participants to engage with schools, health services, and wider community life.

Programme Manager for Community Education, Katrina Griffin-Jones, comments: “We are delighted to be working on this important project. These clubs are not just about language – they are about creating a sense of belonging, supporting families to settle, and building stronger, more connected communities. We are excited to offer courses in the north and south of the borough as well as online.”

Each session focuses on conversational skills that families can use in day-to-day situations, such as meeting neighbours, speaking with teachers, or accessing local services. Alongside language practice, the clubs provide a space to meet new people, share experiences, and learn about opportunities within the community.

Sue, one of the teachers involved, commented: “The participants in the group really enjoy speaking English in a multicultural environment it helps them to become more familiar with different accents which reflects our neighbours and communities in Solihull, and they have found it a really good way to make new friends.”

The Conversation Clubs are free to attend subject to meeting funding criteria and take place at the Riverside Family Hub, Hatchford Family Hub, Shirley Hub as well as online.
