HTQ Graduate Secures IT Role on Campus

16th May 2025

Solihull College & University Centre is proud to celebrate the inspiring journey of Troy Hemsley, a graduate of the Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing – an approved Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ). At just 22 years old, Troy has seamlessly transitioned from student to full-time IT Technician at the College, turning his lifelong passion for technology into a rewarding career.

Diagnosed with autism and ADHD in primary school, Troy sought a learning environment that would support his unique learning style. He found exactly that in the HTQ at the College, where expert tutors and a practical, hands-on curriculum helped him gain critical computing skills in areas such as databases, networks, cyber security, and programming.

HTQ graduate Troy Hemsley celebrates his journey from student to full-time IT Technician at Solihull College & University Centre.

“I’ve always lived and breathed tech,” Troy shares. “I knew from a young age that computing was my future and the HTQ gave me exactly what I needed. To use a computing metaphor, certain operating systems only understand certain executions. So, I need the right input for me to learn. The lecturers here understood my ways of learning and my needs and were incredibly supportive and compassionate.”

Troy’s time at the College began in 2019, progressing through Level 2 and Level 3 IT qualifications. He joined the HTQ in Computing in 2022 and immediately began making an impact, even outside of the classroom. During his studies, Troy built an award-winning virtual cyber lab, improving the College’s existing systems and earning the prestigious Mayor’s Award for his innovation.

Before even graduating, Troy was offered a full-time role as an IT Technician at the College, beginning his professional journey just a week after completing his HTQ. Now, he helps keep College systems secure, efficient, and sustainable, values he holds close to his heart.

“I’ve gone from reporting system errors as a student to now helping prevent them as staff.” Troy reflects.

Now part of the College’s IT team, Troy applies his technical skills daily to keep systems secure, sustainable, and running smoothly.

In addition to his work maintaining systems and supporting students on placement, Troy continues to work on personal tech projects and stay informed about the evolving world of AI and cyber security. His dream is to continue learning, contribute to the world of IT in education, and one day move into leadership within the field.

“If you have a passion and know what you want to do, an HTQ is a brilliant path,” he says. “It sharpens your skills, and you learn with like-minded people.”
