British Sign Language – Stage 3 Study Mode: Part Time | Course Level: N/A
British Sign Language – Stage 3
Where will this course lead?
This course is designed for learners who have successfully completed British Sign Language (BSL) Stages 1 and 2 and wish to continue developing their signing skills. It will help you communicate with greater confidence and fluency in a wider range of situations and may support progression into higher-level British Sign Language learning opportunities.
What will I study?
This course builds on the knowledge and skills developed during Stages 1 and 2. You will continue to develop your ability to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language and increase your confidence in both receptive and productive signing.
You will further develop your knowledge of everyday communication, conversation skills, fingerspelling, Deaf culture, Deaf awareness, and Deaf-related topics. The course also explores a range of everyday life skills and situations, helping you communicate more naturally and effectively in real-world contexts.
A key focus of the course is developing your understanding of the linguistic structure of British Sign Language, enabling you to improve the accuracy, fluency, and clarity of your signing. Learners will also practise translating a variety of information and leaflets from English into BSL, helping to develop both language comprehension and expressive communication skills.
Through practical activities, role-play, group discussion, tutor-led demonstrations, and translation exercises, you will learn to communicate more naturally and accurately across a wider range of topics and situations.
Learners will also be encouraged to engage with the Deaf community through local events and activities where appropriate.
How will this course be delivered?
This course is delivered through classroom-based learning led by tutor demonstration. Learners will practise signing as a whole class, in pairs and in small groups, using role-play and interactive activities to develop confidence and communication skills.
What qualifications will I get?
This is a personal development programme and does not lead to a formal qualification. However, learners will gain increased confidence and competence in using British Sign Language in everyday situations.
How will I be assessed?
This course is informally assessed by the tutor through observation, participation in classroom activities, role-play exercises, and ongoing feedback. Learners will also be encouraged to reflect on their own progress throughout the course.
