You will have a better understaning of making your own clothes using a pattern or making your own patterns.
his course is designed for you to step away from your readymade commercial pattern and learn to transform your creative ideas into real, wearable garments. You will both study designing your own style with help of templates, simple drawing techniques and then develop your 2D designs into pattern pieces using your own measurements.
This is a great way of understanding how a garment is constructed, problem solving, understanding the human body shape and ways of putting your garment together.
During the course you will learn different techniques on how to adjust your pattern to your desired design such mannequin draping, pattern slashing, manipulating darts and much more.
Each term will have a different subject for different levels of difficulty:
Skirts (easy)
Trousers/jeans (medium)
Tops/blouses/shirts or dresses if completed the skirt course (difficult)
Before starting your course you are required to collect some images of garments for inspiration, either on your phone or printed to create your own mind map for your project.
Templates will be provided to put your ideas on paper by being taught some simple drawing techniques and flat drawings to make you visualize your design.
There will be some pattern manipulation exercises on a smaller scale for you to understand how to adjust your pattern to match your design.
Once you have chosen your final design you will create your own pattern to fit your size by using a step-by-step guide from a metric pattern cutting book which involves simple math's and a touch of geometry. This may also involve some mannequin draping techniques to create your look.
You will also plan your pattern layout on fabric; work out how much fabric is required for your garment and make your own instructions on how to sew your garment together.
