T Level Foundation Year – Engineering and Manufacturing
Where will this course lead?
This pre-apprenticeship programme is designed to equip you with the practical skills and knowledge needed to enter the engineering industry. Many students progress to Level 3 upon completion of this program.
What will I study?
During the course you will study the following: Three theory based units (Working in Engineering, Engineering Principle and Manufacture Principles) and three practical based units which will involve leaning skills on bench fitting techniques, Computer Aided Design / Computer Aided Manufacturing, and electronics.

How will this course be delivered?
Approximately half of the course will be in the workshops. The remainder of the course will be classroom based.
What qualifications will I get?
Level 2 Engineering & Manufacturing Diploma
How will I be assessed?
To pass this course you will complete: - Units 201 (Working in Engineering) and 202 (Principles of Engineering), both being an on-line, multiple choice theory test. Unit 203 (Principles of Manufacture) is a written, short answer, theory test. A practical item will be manufactured in the workshop for each discipline and will be assessed as meeting the Engineering Drawing requirements. A one hour written test will accompany each of three practical assessments.
How do I get a place on the course?
Places are offered by interview.
What are the entry requirements?
- Grade 4 in Maths and 3 in English; or
- Grade 4 in English and 3 in Maths
- The applicant needs to provide a school report from their last school showing minimum attendance of 90%.
What else do I need to know?
Essential Information: You must arrive to your lessons on time.
You will need:
Steel toe capped safety boots/shoes
Overalls
Scientific calculator
Notepad/notebook/A4 folder with paper
Suitable pen (black or blue ink)
Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success in your course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout the course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills within engineering classes, though having achieved 4 in Maths and English, no other courses are directed within this program.

What can I do after this course?
On successful completion of the Level 2 Diploma in Engineering you will have completed a programme that will prepare you for a full time level 3 course or an apprenticeship in engineering. To progress to Level 3 you will need to have obtained a 4 in both Maths and English.
This course is suitable for those who want to progress onto to T-Level or those who want to progress to Level 3 Extended Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering.

Job holders in this unit group operate machines to drill, bore, grind, cut, mill or otherwise shape metal workpieces.
What’s Involved?
A Machinist examines drawings and specifications to determine appropriate method, sequence of operations and machine setting. They select and fix work-holding devices and appropriate cutting, shaping, grinding and/or forming tools. They also set machine controls for rotation speeds, depth of cut and stroke, and adjust machine table, stops and guides. They operate automatic or manual controls to feed tool to workpiece or vice versa and check accuracy of machining. They reposition workpiece, change tools and reset machine as necessary during production run. They instruct operators on the safe and correct method of operation of the machine.Maintenance Engineer
Maintenance Engineers erect, install and repair electrical and mechanical plant and industrial machinery, fit and assemble parts and sub-assemblies in the manufacture of metal products and test and adjust new motor vehicles and engines.
