Where will this course lead?

This course is a first step into the world of game design. It builds confidence, creativity, and digital skills while introducing how games are created. It can lead to further study in creative media, game design, or digital technologies at college level, or support learners who want to explore games design as a hobby or future career pathway. 

What will I study?

You will explore the fundamentals of game design, including: 

  • How games work and what makes them fun and engaging 
  • Generating and developing original game ideas 
  • Basic game mechanics, rules, and storytelling 
  • Playtesting and improving games through feedback 
  • Creativity, teamwork, and problem?solving skills 

No previous experience is required. 

How will this course be delivered?

  • Duration: 10 weeks 
  • Delivery: In person, tutor led sessions 
  • Schedule: Wednesdays, 10am-1pm 
  • Location: Blossomfield Campus 

Sessions are practical, interactive, and supportive, combining short explanations with hands on activities. 

What qualifications will I get?

Learners will gain a college?recognised Level 1 introductory qualification or certificate of achievement (subject to attendance and assessment requirements), demonstrating core knowledge and practical skills in game design. 

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is coursework based and practical, with no exams. 
You will be assessed through: 

  • Design activities and creative tasks 
  • Development of simple game concepts or prototypes 
  • Participation, teamwork, and playtesting 
  • A small portfolio of work produced during the course 

What are the entry requirements?

To enrol on the course, you should hold a west midlands postcode, earn £34,249/ or under p.a to be eligible to get the course for free.  

What else do I need to know?

No technical experience is required. 

A supportive tutor will guide you step by step. 

You'll learn in a friendly, relaxed environment with other curious learners. 

What can I do after this course?

After completing the course, you could: 

  • Progress onto further Level 1 or Level 2 courses in game design, creative media, or digital skills 
  • Start developing your own personal game projects 
  • Build a foundation for careers in the games, creative, or digital industries

Games Developer

Programmers and software development professionals design, develop, test, implement and maintain software systems in order to meet the specifications and business objectives of the information system; they also design and develop specialist software e.g. for computer games.

What’s Involved?

They examine existing software and determine requirements for new/modified systems in the light of business needs. They undertake feasibility study to design software solutions. They also write and code individual programs according to specifications. They develop user interfaces. They test and correct software programs. They also write code for specialist programming for computer games, (for example, artificial intelligence, 3D engine development). They implement and evaluate the software. They also plan and maintain database structures. They also write operational documentation and provide subsequent support and training for users.
