Where will this course lead?

This course is designed for learners who are new to learning English and would like to develop the confidence and skills needed to communicate in everyday situations. It can help learners progress onto higher-level ESOL courses and support greater independence in daily life, learning, employment and participation in the local community.

What will I study?

This course introduces learners to the basics of speaking, listening, reading and writing in English. It is suitable for those with little or no previous knowledge of the English language.

You will learn how to use English in everyday situations, including:

• Introducing yourself and providing personal information
• Understanding and using common words and phrases
• Shopping and using local services
• Speaking with family, friends and members of the community
• Reading simple signs, notices and everyday information
• Developing basic writing skills
• Improving pronunciation and listening skills

Lessons are designed to be practical, supportive and relevant to everyday life, helping learners build confidence in communicating in English.

How will this course be delivered?

The course is delivered through tutor-led classroom sessions in a supportive and welcoming environment. Learners will take part in practical activities, discussions, group work and individual tasks designed to improve English language skills and build confidence.

What qualifications will I get?

This course focuses on developing English language skills and confidence. Depending on the course aims and learner progress, learners may work towards an ESOL qualification or a recognised certificate of achievement where appropriate.

How will I be assessed?

Learners will be assessed through classroom activities, practical tasks, discussions and ongoing tutor feedback. There are no formal examinations at this stage unless working towards an accredited qualification.

Assessment is designed to support learning and help learners recognise the progress they are making.

What are the entry requirements?

Learners must be aged 19 or over.

This course is intended for learners with little or no previous knowledge of English. An initial assessment may be carried out to ensure the course is suitable for your current level of English.

What else do I need to know?

This course provides a friendly and supportive environment where learners can develop their English skills at their own pace. Regular attendance is encouraged to help learners make the most of the course and build confidence in using English in everyday situations.

What can I do after this course?

After completing this course, learners may be able to progress onto Entry Level ESOL courses and continue developing their English language skills. Improved communication skills can also support everyday life, community participation, volunteering, further learning and future employment opportunities.
