This intensive Skills Bootcamp prepares you for entry-level positions across TV and theatre, it aims to maximise your employment opportunities in the art department. You'll gain practical skills and industry knowledge to begin your career in production design departments including props, scenic artistry, art direction, graphics, and set building. Bootcampers typically secure positions as assistants in these departments, with many quickly progressing to specialised roles as they apply their training in professional settings. The bootcamps provide invaluable networking opportunities that will give you confidence to pursue a career in production design.

What will I study?

You'll immerse yourself in the creative and technical world of production design, gaining insight into the structure of the Art Department and the broad range of roles available to explore.

You'll learn about key roles in the department from the Production Designer and Art Director, to Concept and Storyboard Artists, Set Decorators, Dressers and Production Buyers.

You'll develop practical skills essential for entry-level positions in both screen and live productions and gain an understanding of the nuanced requirements for each sector. You'll master prop notes, learn techniques for aging and modifying props, and develop skills in creating prop "rigs" that bring magic to life on screen. Set Decoration and Buying will teach you to translate scripts into practical elements, create compelling mood boards, and develop professional photography skills for prop documentation and categorisation.

How will this course be delivered?

This immersive bootcamp combines hands-on workshops with professional insights delivered by current industry professionals. You'll participate in practical workshops that simulate real production scenarios. Collaborative projects will mirror production department structures and you'll develop teamwork skills essential for success in the industry while creating portfolio pieces to showcase to potential employers.

How will I be assessed?

There is no formal assessment. Your progress will be measured through the development of your practical skills and project work quality. Your course leads will provide ongoing feedback throughout the Bootcamp, helping you refine your techniques.

What are the entry requirements?

The Art Department Bootcamp is open to anyone with passion and drive to work in the area of streaming. To qualify for this FREE course, you must be over 19 years of age, live in the West Midlands Combined Authority area.

Applicants for the Art Department Bootcamp may come from a diverse range of backgrounds and motivations, including:

  • Career Changer: Individuals seeking a transition into the dynamic field of live streaming and production from a different career path.
  • Industry Professionals in the West Midlands: Professionals currently working in the creative industry in the West Midlands region who want to broaden their skillset.
  • Recent College or University Graduates: Graduates fresh out of college or university who are eager to discover new employment opportunities
  • Job Seekers Seeking Skill Enhancement: Individuals actively seeking employment opportunities who wish to gain new skills, bolster their confidence, and accumulate valuable industry experience.
  • Freelancers in the Screen Industries: Freelancers with experience in the Creative or cultural sector who want to expand their skillset and network within the field.

This bootcamp offers a versatile learning environment that caters to a broad range of applicants with varying levels of experience and career objectives.

What else do I need to know?

This Bootcamp will begin on Wednesday June 4th - 28th July and will be delivered in person at Blossomfield Campus.

Teaching will run typically three days a week for 8 weeks.
