Where will this course lead?

This course is ideal for anyone with an interest in local history, heritage and culture. It will develop your knowledge of the rich history of Warwickshire and the surrounding area while building research, discussion and observational skills. The course may lead to further history, heritage or community learning opportunities and encourage ongoing exploration of local historical sites and events.

What will I study?

Explore the fascinating history on your doorstep through a series of themed investigations into local people, places and events that have shaped the region.

Throughout the course, you will explore topics such as:

• The myths, legends and ghost stories associated with Warwickshire and why they continue to capture people's imagination.
• The history of witchcraft and folklore within the county.
• The English Civil War and the role Warwick and the surrounding area played during this important period in British history.
• Medieval and Tudor history, including Lady Godiva, Coventry, Kenilworth and the impact of the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
• William Shakespeare and the historical significance of Stratford-upon-Avon.
• The impact of the Second World War on Coventry and the wider region.

The course combines historical research with visits to locations connected to the topics studied, giving learners the opportunity to discover local history through first-hand exploration. Learners will also have the opportunity to help shape the locations and themes explored during the programme.

How will this course be delivered?

The course is delivered over ten weeks and combines classroom-based learning with visits to local historical locations.

Typically, one week will be spent researching a particular theme, location or historical event as a group. The following week will involve visiting and exploring the selected location. Together, learners will investigate a variety of historical sites and discuss their historical significance.

Visits will usually involve meeting either at an agreed location or at Solihull railway station before travelling to the chosen destination. Learners are responsible for their own travel costs.

What qualifications will I get?

This is a personal enrichment course and does not lead to a formal qualification. However, learners will develop their knowledge of local history, research skills and understanding of historical events and heritage sites.

What are the entry requirements?

Learners must be aged 19 or over.

No previous knowledge of history is required. The course is suitable for anyone with an interest in local history, heritage, culture and exploring new places.

What else do I need to know?

This course involves visits to local historical locations within Warwickshire and the surrounding area. Learners are responsible for their own travel costs to and from visit locations.

Where a venue charges an admission fee, visits will only be considered if all members of the group agree. Every effort will be made to use locations that are free to access so that cost does not become a barrier to participation.

The course has been designed to be as accessible as possible. Locations will be selected with accessibility in mind, and there are no specific mobility requirements for taking part.

Learners should have an interest in local history and be prepared to take part in group discussions, research activities and visits. Enthusiasm and curiosity are strongly encouraged.

After completing this course, you may wish to progress onto other history, heritage and community learning programmes offered by the College. You may also choose to continue researching local history independently, visit additional heritage sites or become involved with local history groups, museums or community heritage projects.
