Continue adding units at the next intake to build toward the full HNC, switch onto the full-time route if circumstances change, or use individual unit credits as standalone evidence of professional development. Once all 8 units are completed, progression to the Level 5 HND and onward to a full Bachelor's degree works exactly as it does for full-time students.
Students select from four units available at each intake point.
September intake units: Marketing Processes and Planning, Digital Business in Practice, The Contemporary Business Environment, Accounting Principles.
January intake units: Operational Planning and Management, Leadership and Management, Managing a Successful Business Project, Management of Human Resources.
Students can take a single unit, a pair, or build toward the full qualification across multiple intakes.?
Each unit is delivered as a single 3-hour weekly session, on either a Tuesday or Wednesday, running for 19 weeks per semester (60 guided learning hours per unit, plus 90 hours of independent study). Students attend only the days relevant to their chosen unit or units, rather than the full three-day week required for full-time study.
Each completed unit results in a recognised Pearson BTEC credit award (15 credits). Units can be banked over time, and once a student has completed all 8 units (120 credits), they are awarded the full Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate, exactly as the full-time route does.
Each unit is assessed individually through coursework - written assignments, reports or applied projects - graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. There is no exam. Students receive feedback and a credit result for each unit as they complete it, rather than waiting until the end of a full year
Apply through the standard college admissions process, selecting the unit or units of interest. The alternative entry interview route is also available for modular applicants who don't meet standard academic entry criteria.
The same entry requirements apply as the full-time route: A-Levels, BTEC National Diploma, Access to HE, T Level or equivalent Level 3 qualification, or relevant work experience assessed via the alternative entry interview. GCSE grade 4/C or above in English and Maths (or equivalent) is required, with support available if needed.
This route is particularly suited to employees whose employer may fund individual units as part of a CPD plan, and to students who want to sample higher-level study before committing to the full programme. Some unit combinations work particularly well together depending on career direction:
September pairing - Digital Business + Marketing, for those working in or moving toward marketing, e-commerce or digital roles.
September pairing - Business Environment + Accounting, for those wanting a general management and financial literacy foundation.
January pairing - Leadership + HR Management, for current or aspiring team leaders and people managers.
January pairing - Operations + Business Project, for those in operational, project or process improvement roles.
You can choose the units that interest you and your employer, and build your own bespoke course - for example, one unit in September and two more in January, or four units across the year, all counting towards your full HNC over time.
