HNC Leadership & Management for England (Modular) Study Mode: Part Time   |    Course Level: Level 4

Where will this course lead?

Study individual units through HN Flex, the modular route towards the Higher National Certificate (HNC). You can gain up to 60 credits through this route. To achieve the full HNC, you will need to complete the remaining required units through the full-time programme. The amount of study remaining depends on the units and credits you have already achieved. After completing the HNC, you may progress to a Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) and subsequently to a bachelor's degree, subject to the relevant entry requirements.

What will I study?

The units described below are Unit 3 and Unit 4. Contact the college to confirm availability for the January intake and to find out when other units can be studied towards the 60-credit maximum.

Unit 3: Management of Human Resources. How organisations recruit, develop and retain the right people.

Gain a solid understanding of human resource management (HRM) principles and how they help organisations perform effectively over the long term, with a focus on:

• Recruitment and selection
• Performance management
• Employee relations
• Training and development

Unit 4: Leadership and Management. What effective leaders and managers do.

Explore the difference between management and leadership, learn about key theories and models, and develop the skills to inspire and motivate others. Topics include:

• Leadership styles
• Management functions
• Motivation and team dynamics
• Ethical leadership

How will this course be delivered?

Each unit runs over 15 weeks, with one unit taught on Thursday mornings and the other on Thursday afternoons. Studying one unit involves half-day attendance each week; studying both involves full-day attendance, from 09:00 to 16:15. Ask the college which unit runs in each session and for the individual session times before applying. Learning includes teaching, practical activities and independent study.

Optional online personal progress and development sessions will give you time to review your progress, identify areas for improvement and set goals.

What qualifications will I get?

On successful completion of each 15-credit unit, you will receive unit certification from Pearson. You can study up to four units through this modular route, gaining a maximum of 60 credits, subject to unit availability. Ask the college about the certification provided. If you transfer to the full HNC, your completed units can be considered for recognition of prior learning, so that the credits you have earned can count towards the qualification.

How will I be assessed?

Each unit is assessed separately through coursework, such as written assignments, reports or applied projects, and is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. There are no exams. You will receive feedback and your result after completing each unit, rather than waiting until the end of the academic year.

How do I get a place on the course?

Apply through the standard college admissions process and select the unit or units you want to study. If you do not meet the standard academic entry requirements, you can apply through the alternative entry interview route.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry requirements are the same as for the full-time route: A levels, a BTEC National Diploma, an Access to HE qualification, a T Level or an equivalent Level 3 qualification. Ask admissions for the required grades or UCAS points. Relevant work experience may be considered through an alternative entry interview. You will need GCSEs at grade 4/C or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualifications. If you do not hold these qualifications, contact admissions to discuss whether you can be considered and what support is available.

What else do I need to know?

This route is particularly suited to employees whose employers may fund individual units as part of a continuing professional development (CPD) plan, and to students who want to try higher-level study before committing to the full programme. Ask the college which units best suit your career goals.

Study Mode - Part-time: half a day per week for one unit, or a full day for both units

Course fee - £840 per 15-credit unit

Some applicants may qualify for fee-free study through West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) funding, subject to eligibility and funding availability. Ask the college to confirm whether this applies to you and your chosen units.

Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) tuition fee loans may be available for eligible modular study. A minimum of 30 credits must be studied in an eligible unit or combination of units; the credit total alone does not establish eligibility. The provider, chosen units and applicant must also meet the funding requirements. Ask the college to confirm whether these units qualify before relying on a loan. Student loans are repayable under the applicable repayment rules.
