Engineering student flourishes at university thanks to bursary

A former Engineering student from Solihull College & University student is finishing his degree and on his way to becoming a teacher thanks to a prestigious bursary.

Louie O’Sullivan initially wanted to study business but decided to join his friends studying Engineering at the College’s Woodlands Campus.

“I felt a bit anxious about being in a class where I didn’t know anyone, so I followed my mates to Woodlands! It was such a big change from business, but it was the right move for me.”

Louie studied Aeronautical Engineering – which he thoroughly enjoyed – but he really wasn’t sure what he wanted to do next. His personal tutor, Hayley Ridewood, suggested he go to university, but Louie wasn’t sure. He comments: “I didn’t think university was for someone like me. I couldn’t see how my family could afford it and thought it was out of reach, but then Hayley mentioned we could apply for a bursary.”

Louie did just that. The Lord Bhattacharyya Higher Educations Scholarships support eligible students from selected sixth forms, FE colleges and academies across the West Midlands as they progress from vocational qualifications to study degree-level engineering or related courses at any UK university. Students from low-income households, and those who are under-represented in the engineering sector, are eligible for the opportunity to apply for a £15,000 scholarship to support their studies.

Hayley comments: “Louie was adamant university wasn’t for him. He always said he wanted to secure employment or an apprenticeship. But things changed. Given his strong predicted grades – reflected in his first-year achievements of distinctions and merits – it became clear that he had immense potential. After much consideration and research, Louie decided to apply for a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering at Birmingham City University.

“When I introduced his year group to the Royal Academy of Engineering’s RAE Scholarship, which encompasses the Lord Bhattacharyya Higher Educations Scholarship, I encouraged all students to apply. Initially, Louie was skeptical, but he took the opportunity to apply and successfully secured the prestigious £15,000 scholarship. I still remember the glowing feedback from his interview, which highlighted not only his academic and technical ability but also his professionalism, positive attitude, enthusiasm, and determination to make a difference. “

Louie said he was emotional when he found out he had been awarded the bursary: “I was so happy, it was amazing. My family are so proud of me, and it meant I could progress to university, it was unbelievable.”

Louie is now forging the next steps in his career plan in his final year and is now even helping to teach students. He has confidence and is loving it so much he is continuing his studies to become a secondary school teacher, after applying for his PGCE.

Hayley is delighted: “It was truly a privilege to work with him and witness his personal and academic growth. Louie has an amazing future ahead, and I am both proud and honoured to have played a part in his journey.”
