A former Education and Early Years T-Level student from Solihull College & University Centre is now working full-time in the childcare sector after gaining invaluable hands-on experience through her industry placement.
Freya Miller chose the T-Level after deciding that a more practical route would better suit her career ambitions than A-Levels. Having enjoyed studying Child Development at GCSE, she was keen to build on her knowledge and begin working towards a career in early years education.
T-Levels are two-year qualifications, equivalent to three A-Levels, that combine classroom learning with substantial industry experience. Developed in partnership with employers, the qualification is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge required for the workplace. As part of the course, students complete a substantial industry placement, providing valuable real-world experience within their chosen sector.
For Freya, her placement proved to be one of the most rewarding aspects of the course. She comments: “My placement was at a local infant school, looking after children aged 0 to 7. I enjoyed having real responsibilities and being treated like an adult. We worked in groups and were trusted to look after the children in our group and complete tasks each day, including library visits, helping children change their books and reading with them. I also loved the practical side at college and the freedom to be creative. One project involved designing and making a model sleep room out of a shoebox.”
Following the completion of her T-Level, Freya secured a full-time position at a local nursery, where she now works with children aged between 15 months and two years.
Reflecting on the impact of her placement experience, she said: “My placement gave me so much relevant experience and really helped me get my current job. I was keen to work with 0 to 4-year-olds and my room now is specifically for children aged 15 months to two years. I love working with children at this age because they reach so many important milestones, from walking and talking to learning how to use cutlery and play independently. It’s incredibly rewarding to see their development and be part of that journey.”
Freya believes the combination of industry experience and supportive teaching staff provided an excellent foundation for her career. She adds: “The work experience gives you relevant skills and experience in a real setting. At college, you also build strong relationships with your teachers and the environment feels more relaxed than school. I liked that the exams were staggered across the two years because it helped me see that I was making progress. The qualification wasn’t entirely exam-based either. The observations and professional discussions in the second year counted for 50% of the final grade, and the practice assessments in the first year helped me build my confidence and portfolio ahead of the final assessments.”
