Esports students from Solihull College & University Centre have taken part in a competition designed to offer the experience of competing and setting up a live arena.
The “Rocket Rumble Tournament” took place at Sandwell College with teams from Solihull, Sandwell, South Staffordshire College and Halesowen College taking part.
Lecturer Antony Stafford comments: “We plan to run a similar event in April to give our students some hands-on experience with running a more localised event. They will be learning tech support, live streaming, admissions and shout casting, and gaining valuable knowledge about how the Esports industry works. We hope to also support at the Dream hack gaming event at the end of March following on from our support at the RLCS Major 1 last year at the BP Pulse live arena”.
The College team came together very recently, so only had two practice sessions before competing. Antony was proud of the team’s performance: “To come out in 3rd place after initially being knocked into the 2nd chance bracket, really brought out the best in our team who were working under pressure, showing that perseverance, adaptability and teamwork can overcome large obstacles. These are skills and qualities that can be transferred into the real world. It was still an amazing opportunity for the four colleges to come together and collaborate. All the players performed well, were patient and acted professionally. The audience and overall atmosphere were electric.”
This event was supported by Wolves FC who supplied merchandise to the students who participated.
The College also recently announced a new university level Esports course allowing students to progress on completion of the Level 3 course.
