Where will this course lead?

This course will lead onto the L3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Equine Management in the second year of study.

This course will allow you to develop some of the core skills and knowledge required by employers in the equine industry. You might progress into work as a: Stable yard worker, Riding school assistant, Apprentice in an equine business. Or alternatively you may wish to progress onto the 2nd year of study and complete the L3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Equine Management. This will provide UCAS points and entry into Higher Education courses.

What will I study?

Throughout your studies, you will study the following units:

  • Health and Safety
  • Managing an Equine Event
  • Undertake work related experience
  • Exercising Horses OR Equine Fitness
  • Stable yard operations
  • Equine Health
  • Horse Tack and Equipment

How will this course be delivered?

You will spend three/four days per week in College and one additional day on an equine related work placement.

What qualifications will I get?

After completing year 1 you will achieve a Level 3 Advanced Technical Certificate in Equine Management which is the equivalent to one A-Level.

Successful completion of year one will allow you to apply for the second year of the course (Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Equine Management). After completing year two you will achieve a Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Equine Management which is the equivalent to 2 A-levels. At Distinction Grade this qualification carries 96 UCAS tariff points.

How will I be assessed?

Assessments include a theory exam, health and safety exam and a synoptic assignment as well as unit assignments. Some assessments are externally assessed, and others are assessed within the College.

Your qualification is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Optional units are graded Pass, Merit, Distinction.

How do I get a place on the course?

You will be required complete an application and to attend a College interview.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications for this course are:

- Four GCSE passes at Grade 9 - 4 including English and Maths OR Science.

- Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care at Merit or above with a Grade 4 or above in English.

In addition to the above qualifications you will need:

  • Suitable practical experience on an equine yard
  • a suitable character or tutor reference,
  • a copy of your latest school report (if applicable) and
  • a successful college interview which may include a practical equine task.

What else do I need to know?

You will need to purchase PPE including a riding hat up to current standard, suitable yard boots and outdoor clothing as well as college clothing. There may also be various trips throughout the year. The price of these will become available upon application. A good standard of English and Maths are essential for success in your course, your chosen vocation and life.

Zoo Keeper

Zoo Keepers work directly with animals on a daily basis, looking after their feeding, cleaning and health needs.

What’s Involved?

Zoo Keepers feed, wash, groom, trim and exercise animals. They clean animals' quarters and renew bedding as necessary. They also house, feed, exercise, train, groom horses, dogs and other animals in preparation for entry to shows, races and other events. They check animals for illness, treats minor ailments or call for vets if further treatment is required. They meet prospective owners and advise on animal selection and animal care. They patrol public areas to search for and capture stray or nuisance dogs, and transport captured animals to kennels.
