UAL Level 1 Award and Diploma in Art, Design and Media (Media Pathway)
Where will this course lead?
Successful completion of this course can lead to enrolment onto a Level 2 qualification, apprenticeship or employment, if over 18.
What will I study?
You will develop skills in video, audio, stop motion/animation and photography whilst considering varied media genres such as film, podcasts, publishing etc…You will cover the foundation skills needed for developing, researching, making and evaluating a range of different types of media. You will develop an online portfolio that showcases your knowledge and skills.
Examples of projects you will be studying on the Level 1 Media course are:
- Introductory Media Skills
- Podcast
- Zines
- Stop-Motion/Animation
- Self-directed Project
How will this course be delivered?
The course will be delivered on site, through workshops, seminars, and practical demonstrations over an academic year. This is supported with the opportunity to attend educational visits.
You will be expected to undertake research, production, and other project work outside of class time and you will have access to the appropriate, professional equipment to complete your projects. Cameras, tripods, audio recorders, edit suites and TV and Podcast Studios are all provided.
Regular tutor and peer feedback will help you refine your ideas and develop your visual communication skills.
What qualifications will I get?
On the completion of this course, you will achieve a UAL Level 1 Award and Diploma in Art, Design and Media. It is a one-year, full-time programme at Level 1.
How will I be assessed?
All units will be internally assessed and internally verified through student's online portfolio of practical and written/verbal evidence and are subject to UAL Awarding body's external quality assurance.
Units 1-6 are assessed on a pass-only basis. Unit 7 is the graded unit, where learners can achieve a Pass, Merit, or Distinction there are no exams on this course.
The course is completely assessed at least 3 times a year on coursework with no external exams.
You will receive feedback after each assessment and will learn what grade you are working at and how to challenge and improve your work.
How do I get a place on the course?
You must complete an application form. Once your application has been registered you will be invited to attend an interview to determine your suitability for the subject and level.
Places on the course are offered following a successful interview where you must present a portfolio of your work and produce a positive reference.
You will be expected to bring a short example of your previous creative work with you to discuss during your interview, this might be a photographic series, short video, or animation.
During the interview you should be prepared to discuss your passion for media production and your interest in learning more about this exciting industry and where you hope your study might take you.
You will also be invited to attend a welcome day in late June, where you will have the opportunity to view a show reel of current students work, meet the teaching team and other students who will be beginning the course in September.
What are the entry requirements?
To apply for a place on this course, Two GCSEs at grade E/2 or above are required. Preferably, these should be in Media or a related subject and English. What else do I need to know?
There is financial support available on the college website that can support with travel, equipment, food and trips. Please complete this as soon as possible upon gaining a place.
We provide materials for workshops and a wide range of other resources, but any specific and specialist materials will need to be purchased by students.
Good levels of English and Maths are important for success on your course, your chosen vocation and life. English and Maths skills are embedded throughout your specialist pathway.
If you have not achieved a A*/9 - C/4 grade in Maths and/or English at GCSE, you will be working towards achieving that qualification alongside your course.
