Where will this course lead?

This course is ideal for beginners or for those with some experience; it also makes an excellent refresher.

It is an ideal first step and can lead to employment as a cake decorator or become self-employed offering cakes for special occasions.

However, this course is also ideal as a great hobby, make new friends, increase confidence in yourself and also increase your sense of wellbeing.

 

What will I study?

Courses at Saxon court will be 8 weeks long and complete the following:

Autumn Term - Students will learn how to create a quick buttercream piped sponge cake. You will also learn how to cut and shape cakes and work with fondant icing at beginner's level . These cakes will be ideal for Halloween and Christmas. However, students are also welcome to adapt the cakes for another celebration if they wish. 

You will also learn how to model with other materials such as marzipan, fondant icing, and work with chocolate.  Students will also learn how to make their own inexpensive modelling paste.

  Students will also explore the fun of working with royal icing while learning how to decorate Christmas biscuits and learn to increase and improve their  your piping skills.     

 

Winter Term /Spring Term -- You will increase your skills in cutting and shaping novelty cakes ideal for Valentine and Easter/Spring cakes.

The students will also increase their skills working with piped buttercream cakes and will also get an opportunity to learn how to ice a more formal cake with modern up to date skills.

Students will also increase their confidence modelling with fondant icing, modelling paste, chocolate and marzipan.  

 

Summer Term - You will learn more skills which can be used for wedding cakes working with fondant icing and buttercream icing.

This will include working with stencils, moulds and cutters. You will explore working with advance techniques in piping onto mini cake as well as creating the odd novelty cake.

How will this course be delivered?

Practical class-based work lead by tutor demonstration; Preparation such as cooking small cakes and biscuits will be done at home. However, biscuits and some cakes can be purchased from various retailers.

What qualifications will I get?

This is a personal enrichment programme. 

How will I be assessed?

This course is for personal development and is informally assessed by the tutor with self-assessment and evaluation by the student.

What are the entry requirements?

Students must be aged 19+.

What else do I need to know?

The tutor will inform you on the first session of any tools and equipment that are required. She will also have a list of suppliers where these will be available. You can use ready-made cakes or dummies to decorate.

Please note: Materials are not supplied for Cakes, Flowers/Floristry, Textiles, Soft Furnishings, Homemade Crafts, Calligraphy, Art, Cookery, Tiling, Painting & Decorating, Sewing or Dressmaking.

Students are responsible for providing their own ingredients and some equipment. 

This course will run subject to a minimum class size.
