Where will this course lead?

This free part-time course will help you strengthen your everyday English skills and build confidence in reading, writing and spoken communication.

The programme is designed to:

• Support you in your current job
• Build core English skills for daily life
• Improve your chances of progressing in your career or finding new employment
• Help you support your children with their homework and school activities
• Increase your confidence in speaking, reading and writing
• Prepare you for further study, including Access courses, GCSEs or higher-level vocational programmes

What will I study?

You will be invited to meet a member of the teaching team, who will offer you advice and guidance, to welcome you and help us understand your current level.

You will study a variety of topics designed to improve your everyday English skills, including:

• Writing clear and effective everyday texts
• Developing communication skills for home, work and community life
• Improving spelling, punctuation and grammar
• Building confidence in speaking and listening
• Reading for practical understanding
• Exploring different forms of writing
• Strategies to support independent learning and overcome barriers
• Strengthening skills to help you with work, further study or daily responsibilities

Although this course does not lead to a formal qualification, it will give you improved skills and confidence to move on to accredited programmes.

How will this course be delivered?

Courses are usually 2.5 hours per week and take place at various locations, including options to study at our college campuses or in smaller community learning venues. Daytime and evening options are available across North and South Solihull.

Courses take place in person, not online.

Most courses start in September, but with some additional start dates throughout the year.

What qualifications will I get?

On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a college certificate of attendance. This course provides a strong foundation to help you move on to recognised qualifications such as Functional Skills English or GCSE English.

How will I be assessed?

There are no formal tests. You will be set a personal learning target to work towards. Progress will be reviewed through class activities, structured tasks and discussions with your tutor. You will receive regular feedback to help you build your skills and confidence.

How do I get a place on the course?

Enrolment opportunities are available throughout the year. Enquire through the college website and enter your details. Once a place becomes available, you will be invited to enrol.

Courses are free for most UK residents if you meet the West Midlands Combined Authority eligibility criteria*.

Solihull College offers full-time and part-time courses for residents and businesses across Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Warwickshire and the wider West Midlands.

This course will run subject to a minimum class size.

What can I do after this course?

After completing Adult Everyday English, you may choose to progress to other courses, such as Functional Skills English, GCSE English, Creative Writing, Access programmes, Teaching

Assistant training, management or business courses, apprenticeships or other higher-level study. The course is also a strong first step towards improving your employment prospects or supporting family learning at home.
