An Art & Design student from Solihull College & University Centre who once believed higher education was beyond his reach is celebrating after securing a place at university to study Graphic Design.
Nathan Clarke, 21, has completed a five-year journey at the College, progressing from a Level 1 Art course through to Level 3, ultimately earning his place at Birmingham City University.
Nathan, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of 10, joined the College with a passion for art and a determination to develop his skills. Throughout his studies, he steadily progressed through the levels, building both his confidence and creativity along the way.
Looking back on his time at College, Nathan credits the Level 3 Graphic Design course as a significant turning point in his development. He comments: “I started to make connections and was allowed more freedom in my work which meant I started to blossom. I felt accepted and part of the community and overcame a lot of things which gave me a sense of belonging.”
Nathan found that art provided an important outlet for self-expression and helped him to grow both personally and academically. Despite his talent and determination, he never imagined that university would become a reality.
Nathan is thankful for the support available to him at college: “I received a lot of support. I had counselling and time with Learning Support Assistants which helped me progress. I wasn’t used to this level of support, and it made me realise I had come so far.”
Following his degree, Nathan hopes to pursue a career as an illustrator or in storyboard and character design, combining his creativity with the skills he has developed during his time at College.
Nathan’s success is a testament to his hard work, resilience and commitment, as well as the supportive learning environment that enabled him to thrive.
