A talented Art & Design student from Solihull College & University Centre is taking the next step in her creative journey after starting at the prestigious University of the Arts London (UAL) studying Textiles.

Su Ya Chen, 18, discovered a passion for textiles while studying on the College’s Level 3 Art and Design programme, transforming an early interest in fashion into a clear career ambition.

Initially drawn to the world of fashion design, Su Ya became increasingly fascinated by the fabrics, textures and materials that bring garments to life. This inspired her to explore the creative possibilities of textiles and ultimately pursue a specialist degree at one of the world’s leading arts universities.

Su Ya comments: “I was always interested in fashion and then I became intrigued by the fabrics and texture being used so I enrolled onto the Extended Diploma in Creative Practice (Fine Art). This course has given me a great opportunity to explore and experiment with different materials in preparation for my textiles degree.”

Throughout her studies, Su Ya developed a strong interest in sustainable fashion and the importance of reducing waste within the industry. Sustainability plays a significant role in her creative practice, with many of her designs incorporating recycled and repurposed materials.

One of her most striking creations was produced using discarded plastic, packaging materials and wire from printing processes, demonstrating how everyday waste can be transformed into innovative textile designs.

Su Ya believes sustainability will play a crucial role in the future of fashion and says designers have a responsibility to rethink how materials are used: “I often keep items from old designs and then use them on new items. I never waste anything! We all have to learn as designers to change textile purpose and ensure the clothing is sustainable.”

Her dedication, creativity and commitment to sustainable design have helped her secure a place at Chelsea College of Arts, part of the University of the Arts London. As she prepares to begin the next chapter of her education, Su Ya is excited about the challenges and experiences that lie ahead: “I’m really looking forward to starting my degree. It’s going to be very different, but I am really excited and can’t wait to see where it takes me.”

Su Ya’s success highlights the progression opportunities available to students studying creative subjects at Solihull College & University Centre, with many learners going on to prestigious universities and careers within the creative industries.
