Two friends from Solihull College & University Centre who first bonded over a shared passion for art while at secondary school have secured places at one of the world’s most prestigious art and design institutions.
Ember Leigh and Hope Demaret-Smith, recently completed the UAL Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at the College, designed to bridge the gap between college and university, enabling students to build on existing skills, explore new creative disciplines and develop the confidence and independence needed for higher education.
Ember and Hope will both progress to study Fine Art at the internationally renowned Central Saint Martins, part of the University of the Arts London.
The pair first met at Erdington Academy when they were 14 years old and quickly discovered a mutual love of art. Reflecting on her school days, Ember comments: “I didn’t enjoy school. The only thing I enjoyed was art because it was an escape. I had to sit next to Hope in art because she was the best and my teacher told me I had to push myself. So I did!”
For Hope, creativity has always been part of her life: “My mum painted and my brother taught me how to draw when I was young,” she explained. “I’ve always enjoyed being able to express myself through art.”
Looking to the future, Ember hopes to turn her artistic talent into a career. Alongside her studies, she currently teaches life drawing classes in Birmingham and is passionate about encouraging others to explore their creativity. She comments: “I believe anyone can learn to draw. Just like you can learn maths, you can learn to draw. I’d love to have my own creative space one day, with a studio and workshop, where I could host art parties and help people discover their artistic side.”
As they prepare to begin their studies in London, Ember and Hope are looking forward to continuing the creative journey they started together many years ago, proving that a shared passion and determination can open doors to exciting opportunities.
