Where will this course lead?

This course is designed to help home-educated young people develop confidence in literacy, communication, creativity and problem-solving through project-based learning. Learners will gain valuable skills that can support further learning, personal development and future enterprise activities, while helping them build confidence in expressing ideas and working independently.

What will I study?

This engaging and supportive course is designed for home-educated young people who may have found traditional approaches to literacy challenging.

Rather than focusing solely on worksheets and written exercises, learners will develop their reading, writing, communication and creative thinking skills through exciting, real-life projects. They will become young entrepreneurs, developing an idea of their own and taking it from an initial concept through to a finished proposal, product or presentation.

Projects may include:

• Creating a computer game, including characters, storylines, instructions and promotional materials.
• Writing and illustrating a story, comic or graphic novel.
• Inventing a new product, including branding, packaging and advertising.
• Developing a fashion, craft or creative enterprise.
• Designing a café concept, food product or menu.
• Creating an app, website or online business concept.
• Producing a board game, including rules, characters and packaging.
• Planning a YouTube channel, podcast or magazine.
• Developing a simple business idea and exploring customers, costs, pricing and promotion.

For learners who are unsure what they would like to create, a range of project ideas and prompts will be available to help them get started.

Literacy skills will be naturally embedded throughout the course. Learners will practise reading, writing, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, research and communication skills through activities linked directly to their chosen project.

Each session will also include a short "Back to Basics" activity designed to support essential literacy skills and build confidence in a supportive and engaging way.

How will this course be delivered?

The course is delivered through tutor-led, project-based workshops that combine creative activities, enterprise concepts and literacy development. Learners will work on individual projects with support and guidance from the tutor while participating in group discussions and collaborative activities.

Sessions have been designed to provide a flexible and supportive learning environment. Planned break and reset opportunities are built into each session to help learners remain engaged and focused.

Parents, guardians or carers must attend with learners throughout the course.

What qualifications will I get?

This is a personal enrichment and community learning course and does not lead to a formal qualification.

However, learners will develop valuable literacy, communication, creativity, problem-solving and enterprise skills that can support future learning and personal development.

How will I be assessed?

There are no formal examinations or assessments on this course.

Progress will be monitored through participation, project development, practical activities and ongoing tutor feedback. Learners will have the opportunity to reflect on their progress and celebrate their achievements throughout the course.

What are the entry requirements?

This course is intended for home-educated young people aged 8 and above.

A parent, guardian or carer must attend alongside the learner throughout the course.

No previous enterprise knowledge or business experience is required. The course is suitable for learners of all abilities, particularly those who may benefit from a creative and practical approach to developing literacy skills.

What else do I need to know?

This course provides a welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment where learners can develop literacy skills through creativity and enterprise projects rather than traditional classroom-based activities.

The focus is on building confidence, encouraging curiosity and helping learners discover how literacy skills can be used in real-life situations. Learners will be encouraged to work at their own pace and pursue projects that reflect their interests and strengths.

Parents, guardians and carers play an important role in supporting learners during the course and are expected to attend all sessions.

After completing this course, learners may wish to progress onto other home education, literacy, creative arts, enterprise or community learning programmes offered by the College.

The skills developed during the course can support future educational pathways, personal projects, entrepreneurship opportunities and greater confidence in reading, writing, communication and independent learning.
