Painter & Decorator Apprenticeship Study Mode: Part Time   |    Course Level: Level 2

Where will this course lead?

By completing this apprenticeship, you will become a qualified Painter and Decorator. You will be prepared to work on a huge variety of projects-from new-build housing and schools to high-end retail spaces and historic restorations. Good decorators are always in high demand, as their work is essential for both the protection and the beauty of buildings.

What will I study?

You will go far beyond just "slapping on some paint." The course covers:

• Preparation Techniques: Learning how to sand, fill, and prime surfaces to ensure a perfect finish.
• Paint Application: Mastering brushes, rollers, and spray equipment for various surfaces.
• Wallcoverings: Learning the precise art of measuring, cutting, and hanging different types of wallpaper.
• Colour Theory: Understanding how to mix colours and advise clients on the best finishes for their space.
• Specialist Finishes: An introduction to decorative effects like graining, marbling, or stencilling.
• Paint Spraying: Mastering the setup, operation, and maintenance of airless and HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray systems.
• Health and Safety: Working safely with chemicals, at heights, and ensuring site cleanliness.

How will this course be delivered?

This is a work-based apprenticeship, meaning it blends real work with formal training.  Most of your learning happens on the job at your employer's premises, backed up with off-the job training at college.

• On-the-Job (Work-Based) Learning: Most of your training will be practical, hands-on experience in your workplace, working alongside experienced tradespersons.
• Off-the-Job Training: A minimum of 20% of your time will be dedicated to 'off-the-job' training. This includes day-release at college as well as self-directed study time for theory and practice.
• Duration: The apprenticeship typically takes 24 months to complete.  (This may be reduced if you have relevant prior experience.)
• Support: You'll be supported by your employer, a dedicated college tutor/assessor, and an in-work mentor throughout the programme.

What qualifications will I get?

Upon successful completion, you will receive:

• Level 2 Painter and Decorator Apprenticeship Standard.
• Relevant Functional Skills in English and Maths (if you don't already meet the requirements).
• The credentials required to apply for your Blue Skilled Worker CSCS Card, which is vital for working on commercial sites.

How will I be assessed?

Your expertise will be tested through an End-Point Assessment (EPA) once your training is complete. This includes:

Knowledge Test: A multiple-choice exam to verify your understanding Your journey has two main stages:

1. On-Programme Assessment: This includes continuous assessment of your work performance, regular reviews with your employer and training provider, practical projects, and building a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your skills and knowledge.
2. End-Point Assessment (EPA): Once you and your employer agree you are ready (a stage known as Gateway), you will sit the final assessment, which includes:

• Knowledge Test: A multiple-choice exam to test your understanding of the theory.
• Observation: A practical assessment where an independent examiner watches you perform specific painting and decorating tasks.
• Professional Discussion: An interview-style chat about your work portfolio to prove you know your stuff

What are the entry requirements?

To join this programme, you must:

• Be at least 16 years of age.
• Be employed in a relevant painting and decorating role for a minimum of 30 hours per week.
• Hold English GCSE Grade 2/E, Level 1 Functional Skills, or an equivalent.
• Hold Mathematics GCSE Grade 2/E, Level 1 Functional Skills, or an equivalent.
• Attributes: Excellent attention to detail, good hand-eye coordination, and a clear passion for the trade.

What else do I need to know?

Decorating is a clean trade in its results, but the process can be messy! You'll need to be comfortable working on ladders or scaffolding and have a patient, methodical approach to work. You will eventually be expected to own your own high-quality brushes and tools, and you must wear appropriate PPE to protect yourself from fumes and dust.

What can I do after this course?

A Level 2 qualification opens many doors. You could:

• Progress to Advanced Painter and Decorator qualifications to specialise in a particular field.
• Move into Interior Design or Colour Consultancy.
• Advance into Site Management or Estimating.
• Start your own business as a Self-Employed Decorator, building your own brand and client base.
