Bricklayer Apprenticeship Study Mode: Part Time   |    Course Level: Level 2

Where will this course lead?

Completing this apprenticeship makes you a qualified Bricklayer. You will be equipped to work on large-scale housing developments, commercial construction sites, or domestic extensions and renovations. The demand for new housing in the UK means that skilled bricklayers are consistently among the most sought-after and well-paid tradespeople in the industry.

What will I study?

You will learn the fundamental skills of masonry, focusing on precision, speed, and structural integrity:

• Setting Out: Learning how to interpret blueprints and transfer measurements onto the ground.
• Brick and Blockwork: Mastering the different "bonds" (patterns) used in construction, such as Stretcher bond and English bond.
• Cavity Wall Construction: Building double-layered walls with insulation and wall ties.
• Decorative Masonry: Learning how to create arches, chimney stacks, and ornamental brickwork.
• Safe Working Practices: Mastering the use of mixing equipment, power cutters, and working safely on scaffolding.

How will this course be delivered?

This is a work-based apprenticeship, meaning it blends real work with formal training.  Most of your learning happens on the job at your employer's premises, backed up with off-the job training at college.

• On-the-Job (Work-Based) Learning: Most of your training will be practical, hands-on experience in your workplace, working alongside experienced tradespersons.
• Off-the-Job Training: A minimum of 20% of your time will be dedicated to 'off-the-job' training. This includes day-release at college as well as self-directed study time for theory and practice.
• Duration: The apprenticeship typically takes 24 months to complete.  (This may be reduced if you have relevant prior experience.)
• Support: You'll be supported by your employer, a dedicated college tutor/assessor, and an in-work mentor throughout the programme.

What qualifications will I get?

Upon successful completion, you will achieve:

• Level 2 Bricklayer Apprenticeship Standard.
• Relevant Functional Skills in English and Maths (if you don't already have them).
• Qualification for the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS Card, which is your "passport" to work on professional construction sites.

How will I be assessed?

Your journey has two main stages:

1. On-Programme Assessment: This includes continuous assessment of your work performance, regular reviews with your employer and training provider, practical projects, and building a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your skills and knowledge.
2. End-Point Assessment (EPA): Once you and your employer agree you are ready (a stage known as Gateway), you will sit the final assessment, which includes:

• Knowledge Test: A multiple-choice exam to test your understanding of the theory.
• Observation: A practical assessment where an independent examiner watches you perform specific bricklaying tasks.
• Professional Discussion: An interview-style chat about your work portfolio to prove you know your stuff.

What are the entry requirements?

To join this programme, you must:

• Be at least 16 years of age.
• Be employed in a relevant bricklaying role for a minimum of 30 hours per week.
• Hold English GCSE Grade 2/E, Level 1 Functional Skills, or an equivalent.
• Hold Mathematics GCSE Grade 2/E, Level 1 Functional Skills, or an equivalent.
• Attributes: Good physical fitness, an eye for straight lines, and a strong passion for the construction industry.

What else do I need to know?

Bricklaying is an outdoor trade. You will be working in all types of weather, from summer heat to winter frost. It is a physically active job that requires heavy lifting and standing for long periods. You'll need to provide your own basic toolkit (trowels, levels, hammers) and wear appropriate PPE, including steel-toed boots and hard hats.

What can I do after this course?

A Level 2 qualification is your foundation for a great career. You could:

• Move into Site Supervision or become a Clerk of Works.
• Move into Quantity Surveying or Estimating.
• Become a Self-Employed Bricklayer, taking on your own contracts and managing your own schedule.
