Where will this course lead?

The Higher National Certificate is a nationally and internationally recognised qualification throughout the business world. It provides a basic grounding in the core areas of business and management. This is a level 4 qualification, equivalent to the first year of university and is worth 120 credits under the Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ).

The course has a huge advantage in that it provides you with several different opportunities. On completion you may choose to:

  • Continue your studies for 1 more year and complete the Higher National Diploma in Business. Holders of the Higher Diploma in Business can study for one additional year at various UK universities and gain a business degree (e.g. BA Honours in Business
  • Study further qualifications and ultimately chartered membership with Professional bodies such as CIPD (Human Resources), ILM (Leadership and Management, CIMA (Accounting) CIM (Marketing).
  • Enter employment into specialist areas such as Accounting, Marketing, HR, Law or Project Management.

How will this course be delivered?

The course is delivered through a combination of classroom teaching, practical workshops and independent learning/self-study.

You will attend college for two days a week for a total of 12 hours. There is an expectation of a further 4 hours per week of independent study.

The course is delivered over 12 months.

What qualifications will I get?

Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Leadership and Management HTQ - 120 Credits.

How will I be assessed?

You'll complete written assignments for each module that you study, letting you demonstrate the new knowledge you've gained and the skills you've mastered.

Students who are non-native English speakers or who have not studied the final two years of school in English but can demonstrate capability in English at a standard commensurate to IELTS 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 being awarded on individual sections for a level 4, 5 or 6 qualifications may be considered as eligible to apply for the programme.

Equal consideration is given to applicants who are currently in relevant work and wish to apply to Solihull College & University Centre. To apply, they must have a minimum of 3 years' relevant work experience, demonstrating technical, management or supervisory duties. Any application must also include a reference from their line manager which supports entry to higher education.

Applications for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) are welcomed in accordance with the Solihull College Admissions Policy. Any student wishing to apply for RPL or RPEL should first speak to the Programme Coordinator and provide a full transcript of the work to be considered. The Programme Coordinator will then map the learning outcomes for the previously completed study to those of the programme and make a recommendation to the APL/APEL Committee.?

There will be no requirement for any books or equipment to be purchased.

If you need to re-take a module due to non-achievement, this will also incur a cost.

What can I do after this course?

The Level 4 Higher National Certificate provides a solid grounding in Leadership and Management, upon successful completion of the HNC Leadership and Management students can apply to further studies many universities allow advanced entry to the second year of a course; however, this will vary by institution and applicants are advised to seek guidance from universities offering relevant progression degrees.
