A new university level Esports course is set to be launched at Solihull College & University Centre’s Blossomfield Campus as the multi-billion-pound industry continues to grow.
The HNC will allow progression to the HND, with the possibility to then top up to a full degree within 3 years. The course will cover topics such as streaming and broadcasting, branding and sponsorship, event planning, set design, content creation and player and team psychology.
Head of Higher Education, Claudine Barnes, says the industry is growing so rapidly and there are many job opportunities. She comments: “Esports is one of the fastest growing industries, and the course content isn’t just about gaming (for all those worried parents out there!). It’s computing and tech, but with a splash of business, event management, creative media production, even sports psychology – so job opportunities could be directly in the esports sector, but also in broadcasting, social media marketing and content creation, team development or events management.”
The HNC course has been designed in collaboration with the British Esports Federation, and provides an opportunity for the alignment of social, physical, mental and financial skills into one qualification, focusing on strategy, skill and teamwork. The college is busy investing in new tech to complement the already existing state-of-the-art immersive Esports lab.
Course Lead, Ghazala Iffat, comments: “Esports is an up-and-coming area not only in gaming, but in sporting events. At Solihull College & University Centre we already offer the Esports at level 3, so the HNC/D will provide a great progression opportunity for current students, as well as new students looking to advance their skills and knowledge in the sector. The course is designed to prepare students for the rapidly expanding esports industry, developing practical skills in skill and tactics analysis, broadcasting, and even management. With a strong focus on industry-relevant experience, teamwork, and professional practice, students will be equipped with the knowledge and confidence needed to progress into careers across the esports sector.”
