Ducks delighted with new home thanks to Construction students

30th September 2025

Construction and Animal, Equine & Veterinary Nursing departments at Solihull College & University Centre have joined forces to build a home for the College’s ducks.

In an exciting collaboration between departments, this was a fantastic opportunity for the students to work on a live, time sensitive project.

Bricklaying apprentices were lent a digger by Armstrong Build. The project started with digging the soil in a great big pile for the College’s goats to have a fun time foraging. Concrete foundations were laid, before the group took turns in completing the super structure brick and block work to the completed height.

Apprentice Tutor, David Challenor, comments: “I had 12 apprentice bricklayers building, digging, sawing and helping to complete this new shed for the animal welfare team. With regards to how proud I am as a lecturer with this group I feel honoured to be a part of this fantastic team.

“We then completed another project over summer at the Woodlands Campus. The group built around 12 brick planters as the original planters were made of wood and a bit worse for wear.”

Head of Animal, Equine and Veterinary Nursing, Claire Powell, commented: “It’s been fabulous to be able to collaborate on this project with our construction department. The students have been so enthusiastic and working on this live project brief has given a great purpose to their work. We are already discussing future projects with the team so hope our collaboration will continue with mutual benefit for the students and our animals!”

It won’t be long until Donald the duck has some new friends to play with in the duck pond!
