Head shave raises money for cancer charity

25th August 2021

A Visual Arts Technician from Solihull College & University Centre has raised an incredible £1,400 for Macmillan Cancer Support by shaving her head.

Janet Garner, from Sutton, was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer herself six years ago and lost all her hair, fingernails and toenails as a result. More recently her cousin has also been diagnosed with cancer.

Janet comments: “Often with cancer, even though you’re ill, nobody can really see that. When your hair falls out, each time you look at yourself, you look ill and psychologically it makes you feel worse. My cousin has much more serious cancer and she’s lost her hair from chemo. I thought if I shave mine off, she wouldn’t be the only one without hair.”

Janet has received plenty of fundraising support from family, friends and colleagues. She adds: “I was blown away by the donations and the comments people made on the page. It was really lovely.”
