Ukranian bootcamp student lands charity role

4th June 2026

A former MasterChef bootcamp student says the confidence she gained during the course has helped her gain full time employment.

32-year-old Kateryna Qader moved to the UK from Ukraine 4 years ago. She previously worked as a multi-platform journalist before the war and wanted to get some experience in unscripted TV here in the UK. So, she enrolled on the MasterChef bootcamp delivered by Solihull College & University Centre.

Kat says she was delighted to get a place on the course: “I needed to gain experience using my skills here in the UK. The Masterchef bootcamp provided me with an amazing opportunity and made me understand I can easily transfer my skills.”

The bootcamp course was funded by the West Midlands Combined Authority to help people gain experience in TV and media. The course offered aspiring TV professionals a unique opportunity to develop first-hand experience in the world of unscripted entertainment. The bootcamp blended in-person and online sessions and was delivered by industry experts with a track record of shaping hit shows.

Kat was able to use the skills and confidence she gained on the course to land a job working as a development officer for a charity. She comments: “The bootcamp was great as I was gently moved from my comfort zone. I met new people and I am able to enhance my communication skills in the charity work. It’s the perfect stepping stone as I explore the UK job market.”

It’s just one of a series of bootcamps run by the College and funded by the WMCA.

Kat says the bootcamps are a great way of building confidence: “No-one should ever give up the chance to push themselves. Each bootcamp is about building confidence – it allows you to try work experience and help people understand what they need. It’s a really good chance to try something.”
