Solihull College & University Centre recently welcomed volunteers from local company Correla Data Services to help with a variety of environmental initiatives at its Blossomfield Campus.
The volunteers, alongside members of the Colleges staff, cleared out areas of leaves and brambles, planted trees, and built bird and bat boxes to be hung in various locations around campus.
The College is participating in Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS)’s ‘Nature Friendly Grounds’ pilot programme – a new biodiversity-focused initiative designed to help educational institutions create long term change by embedding nature-positive actions into everyday operations, alongside targeted habitat and species conservation.
The event was a huge success. Head of Animal, Equine & Veterinary Nursing, Claire Powell, commented: “It gave us focused time to collaborate with the local community in raising awareness of the nature crisis and how we can all work together to make positive steps and changes to support recovery.”
Head of Data Services at Correla, Rich Hare, commented: “It was brilliant to spend a sunny day outdoors together doing something practical. We are genuinely proud of what we managed to accomplish. We look forward to returning one day to see the legacy of what we helped create!”
Part of the day’s activity focused on the pond area at the rear of the campus. The next phase of work involves transforming this space into an area where staff and students can work, relax, and enjoy the campus’s natural surroundings.
