Solihull College & University Centre is proud to announce its participation in Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS)’s ‘Nature Friendly Grounds’ pilot programme.
Nature Friendly Grounds is a new biodiversity-focused programme designed to help educational institutions create long term change by embedding nature-positive actions into everyday operations, alongside targeted habitat and species conservation.
The College is one of only four colleges involved in the pilot scheme and joins Birmingham City University as the only other institution in the West Midlands.
Being a part of this pilot will raise awareness of biodiversity and its important part to play in maintaining a sustainable planet.
Head of Animal, Equine & Veterinary Nursing, Claire Powell, comments: “Being part of this pilot has really got us thinking and taking lots of positive action on campus to enhance biodiversity. We have already become a pesticide free campus, conducted various baseline surveys, planted more trees, a new wildflower meadow and have plans to create a moon meadow too. It has encouraged our grounds team, curriculum teams, and managers to all collaborate in meeting our various targets because obviously we are going for GOLD!”
In 2024, the College was a part of the Hedgehog Friendly Campus scheme, a project created to protect hedgehogs, enhance their habitat, and create awareness.
Through taking part in the Nature Friendly Grounds programme, the College looks forward to furthering its progress towards a vibrant, biodiverse campus where students and staff can connect with nature!
