The Senior Leadership Team at Solihull College & University Centre is leading the way in making positive changes towards a more sustainable future.
15 members of the team recently received Carbon Literacy Training in a bid to make them more aware of the issues affecting the planet. The training detailed the causes and effects of the climate crisis, climate policy, climate justice and effective climate communication. After the training, the staff were invited to take two pledges – one as an individual and another in which they consider what they could do as a group.
College Lecturer, Meghan Wakefield, delivered the training alongside colleague Craig McCauley. Megan comments: “The training was really interactive and involved some group-work, a Dragon’s-Den activity and plenty of surprises about individual and national carbon consumption. The Senior Leadership Team were highly engaged, working in groups to respond to climate communication challenges and making suggestions about how we can create a zero-carbon society. We expect to receive some ambitious pledges based on the conversations that took place! As college leaders they are best placed to influence culture change in the college and have most power to do so and there is already some great behaviour change and green skills work happening from staff and students.”
Vice Principal of HR and Student Services, Pete Haynes, comments: “The Carbon Literacy Training was an engaging and thought-provoking experience for our Senior Leadership Team. Thanks to the programme content and Megan and Craig’s compelling delivery, it deepened our understanding of the many factors influencing climate change and highlighted the powerful role organisations and individuals can play in making a difference.
“We have all made personal commitments to reduce our impact, and we are equally committed to leading by example as we drive forward sustainability across the College. This training has reinforced our determination to create a more sustainable future for our students, staff and community.”
The training will be rolled out to more staff on College Development Days in the future.
