The Principal and Chief Executive of Solihull College & University Centre and Stratford-upon-Avon College has launched a new book exploring the diverse leadership journeys of senior figures from across the Further Education sector.
Dr Rebecca Gater conceived the idea for Inspiring Senior Leadership in Further Education while researching her doctoral thesis. The book brings together the personal stories of 20 leaders from across the sector and highlights the many different pathways into leadership, challenging assumptions about who can become a senior leader and how they arrive in these roles.
Rebecca comments: “I’m incredibly proud to have edited this collection of stories from leaders across the Further Education sector. More than anything, I’m grateful to the contributors who shared their experiences, insights and reflections so openly. Their honesty creates a powerful and authentic picture of leadership in Further Education today.”
She added: “One of the key messages from both my research and this book is that senior leaders are ordinary human beings. There is no single background, personality type or career path that leads to leadership. Not everyone in a leadership role has come from a privileged background, and many of the contributors took routes into leadership that challenge common assumptions. One chapter is written by someone who became a single parent as a teenager, while another shares the experience of receiving a neurodiversity diagnosis later in life.”
The book explores themes including identity, resilience, belonging and career progression, providing an insight into the realities of leadership and encouraging aspiring leaders to see themselves reflected in the stories being shared.
Among the contributors to the book is the College’s Vice Principal for Business Growth, Skills and Partnerships, Nancy Buckley, who reflects on how a successful career in publishing provided unexpected foundations for a leadership role in Further Education, illustrating the varied routes people take into the sector.
Rebecca’s doctoral research has also led to the development of two leadership programmes designed to nurture future talent across the sector.
The first, the Aspiring Leaders Programme, is available to staff at Solihull College & University Centre and Stratford-upon-Avon College. The programme supports colleagues in developing the skills, confidence and mindset needed to progress their careers, offering training, mentoring and practical leadership experience.
The second initiative, the Future Leaders Programme, is delivered through Colleges West Midlands and was established through the Racial Equality Steering Group. It aims to address the underrepresentation of colleagues from black, asian and mixed heritage backgrounds in management roles, providing aspiring leaders with a tailored development experience before they move into management positions.
Rebecca believes these initiatives are already making a tangible difference, with several staff members progressing into more senior roles within the organisation.
She said: “By sharing stories and creating development opportunities, we can challenge assumptions about who belongs in leadership and what successful leaders look like. It has been inspiring to see colleagues develop their confidence, progress their careers and recognise that leadership can be within reach for people from all backgrounds.”
A strong advocate for visible leadership, Rebecca recently delivered 34 welcome talks to new students across the College’s three campuses as part of induction activities. Drawing on themes that also underpin her book, she encouraged students to think about the stories they are creating through their actions, behaviours and attitudes.
She said: “I encouraged students to recognise that they are authors of their own story. It’s important that they understand who we are, what we stand for and the values that underpin our community. I talked to them about the fact that they are writing that story every day through the choices they make, the effort they put in and the way they treat others. Just as the contributors to this book each have a unique story that shaped their path into leadership, our students have the opportunity to shape their own futures through the decisions they make today.”
Inspiring Senior Leadership in Further Education celebrates the richness of diverse experiences and demonstrates that there is no single route into leadership. Through 20 personal accounts from senior leaders across the sector, the book aims to inspire current and aspiring professionals to see leadership as accessible, authentic and achievable.
